Build and weave your own stool in the Appalachian folk tradition. In this two-day class, we will start with a red oak log, recycled from an urban tree in Annapolis’s Historic District, and end by weaving the seat out with hickory bark from the Shenandoah Valley. Hickory bark is a traditional Appalachian weaving material– it has a lot of character, and it is more durable than modern weaving materials (e.g. rattan, danish cord, shaker tape). You will take your woven stool home at the end of class, and the skills you learn will enable you to turn firewood into stools in your own backyard! All work will be done with hand tools provided by the instructor. No woodworking experience is required. This class is physically demanding, but very rewarding. Ages 15+.
