    • The Beauty of African Rhythm: An Introduction to Traditional West African Instruments

      Description:

      This program is administered as a school show assembly or lecture-demonstration. It is an introduction to the instruments of Manding West Africa and their influence on musical traditions around the world. Students will learn what these instruments are, how they are played, how they are constructed, and how they are used within traditional society. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with the performer(s) using audience participation methods.

      Maximum 400 students per show. 45 minutes.

      Curriculum Connections

      Science Concept for Science Skills Development: Identifying size, pitch, and volume of instruments (i.e. bigger keys have lower sound, smaller keys have higher sound). Learning geography of the ancient Manding West Africa empire.

      Technology Concept for Technology Skills Development: Identifying how instruments are tuned to develop sound (i.e. how strings are tightened to change the pitch for string instruments and how ropes are tightened on drums, therefore tightening the skin to change the pitch, etc.)

      Engineering Concept for Engineering Skills Development: Observe how instruments are constructed (wood, skin, ropes, gourds, calabash, etc)

      Arts Concept for Performing Arts Skills Development: Language development, basic techniques for playing instruments, dance, and listening (call and response).

      Math Concept for Math Skills Development: Identifying the number of countries that make up Manding Africa, clapping in response to the rhythm for basic counting, calculating musical phrases (the number of notes musical phrase one added to or multiplied by the number of notes in musical phrase two)

      Arts Strategy used to teach STEM Concepts: Demonstrating all STEM concepts in the exploration of the history through storytelling, geography, language, rhythm, songs, and sound and construction of instruments of the Manding Empire of Africa.

    • Full Orchestra Workshop

      Description:

      This workshop brings different instruments from the Mali Empire together to create the full orchestra experience. Students will learn compositions from the repertoire of the royal musicians of ancient Mali as played in their original traditional context. This package includes instruments such as Balafon, Djembe, Dundun, and voice. It allows the opportunity for students to observe the role of each instrument and the relationship between the instruments as the compositions grow. This workshop teaches rhythms of the Djembe repertoire as played within the context of a complete Manding orchestra.

      Number of students: 14 students (to ensure each student has an instrument). Up to one hour.

    • African Music and Culture Residency

      Description:

      Over the duration of the course, students will develop techniques for playing. They will learn to play intricate rhythms that will later be arranged into musical compositions. They will learn cultural and music history along with the associated geography and language. Students will be periodically assessed of their knowledge of the information covered during the course. The capstone to the course will be a culminating event or Final Presentation will be an opportunity for students to share their work with peers and/or invited family.

      Learning objectives
      Week 1*: Introduces students to the general origins of the instruments and their function within the different ethnic groups of the (Manding) Mali Empire. Students will learn the basics of playing techniques and phrasing as well as how they interlock into intricate poly-rhythmic patterns. Students will also learn about the context of rhythms with songs and musical language as related to Manding African languages/cultures.
      Week 2*: Elaborates on the understanding of how to use traditional phrases to develop musical compositions. While developing these arrangements, students will learn about the relationship between rhythm, language, and song as if they were functioning within the constructs of a traditional African village.
      *The timeframe of 2 weeks is provided as an example. The time of the residency can be adjusted according to your organization’s availability and specifications.

      Residencies include:
      • A minimum of 3-5 classroom sessions per class;
      • Cultural and music history;
      • A culminating event or Final Presentation will be an opportunity for students to share their work with peers and/or invited family.

      Instruments included: 4 balas, 4 djembes, and 6 dunduns
      Maximum students per class: 14 students (to ensure each student has an instrument)

      Program Costs:

      Program 1 (Assembly) Pricing: $400 (up to 2 artists), $600 (3 artists)

      Program 2 (Workshop) Pricing: $300

      Program 3 (Residency) Pricing: Custom. Contact Artist for pricing information. No charge for instrument rentals. However, client will be held responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen instruments. Please inform if there is a safe space for the instruments to be stored during the course.
