Featured AAC Artist Series: Janice Hendra

The Arts Council Virtual Art Gallery Series Featuring AAC Artist: Janice Hendra

Growing up in Detroit I attended select art classes at the Detroit Institute of Arts throughout high school. Every Saturday the DIA was my playground and being surrounded by Diego Rivera murals and European masterworks instilled admiration and reverence for painting and painters. Being able to touch a brush to canvas and create an image that expresses a reality or a feeling that comes from within is a remarkable talent.

I attended Michigan State University and received a BA in Fine Arts and Art History in 1972. I worked as a studio potter for 8 years, but in 1980 my life took a sharp turn when I discovered that computers fascinated me and I became a programmer. For the next 30 years, as a systems analyst, my creative outlet was designing technology solutions.

Now, retired I have immersed myself fully in the visual arts and painting.

As to my style, I have yet to develop one, there are just too many materials to experiment with and too many ideas floating around in my head to settle on one style. I create using realism, abstraction, or a combination of both and use materials and methods that are both traditional and experimental. I love being able freely get wrapped up in whatever visual exercise presents itself.

I have exhibited with the Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Annapolis Watercolor Club, West River Artists, the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County and at Gallery 564 in Severna Park.
