THE ESSENCE OF EVA

New Documentary Celebrates the Life and Legacy

of Beloved Local Songstress Eva Cassidy

The Annapolis Film Society and the 2026 Annapolis Film Festival are proud to present a special screening of the acclaimed new feature documentary THE ESSENCE OF EVA on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 7 PM in the Main Auditorium at Maryland Hall. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $20.
The 2026 Annapolis Film Festival and Annapolis Film Society are made possible in part through the generous support of the Brian & Patricia Giese Foundation.
Directed by acclaimed filmmakers Alex Fegan and Malcolm Willis, THE ESSENCE OF EVA is an intimate and deeply moving portrait of legendary singer Eva Cassidy, whose extraordinary voice continues to captivate audiences worldwide nearly three decades after her passing. Featuring never-before-heard recordings and rare archival footage, the film explores Cassidy’s remarkable artistry, quiet determination, and enduring influence on music lovers around the globe.
Told through the voices of her parents, family, friends, collaborators, and celebrated musicians including Mick Fleetwood and Sting, the documentary traces Eva’s journey from her early years growing up in Maryland to the now iconic Live at Blues Alley recording that would later cement her legacy as one of the most beloved vocalists of her generation.
Though Eva Cassidy passed away from melanoma in 1996 at just 33 years old, her music found a massive international audience after her death, ultimately achieving multi-platinum success and inspiring millions with its emotional honesty and timeless beauty.
In their director’s statement, Fegan and Willis describe the film as “a celebration of a voice that continues to move millions, of a legacy that grew out of authenticity, and of a woman who, though no longer with us, still has so much to say.”
