Food Glorious Food: Class, Culture and Cooking in Colonial Annapolis

Step back in time and explore the tastes, traditions, and stories that shaped colonial Annapolis! This immersive walking tour reveals how food reflected class, culture, trade, and daily life. Visit three distinctive historic sites: the Waterfront Warehouse, Hogshead Trades Museum, and William Paca House & Garden, guided by Historic Annapolis staff member and historian Christina Chaffman.
Along the way, discover how global trade, local ingredients, social status, and enslavement shaped what Annapolitans ate and how food was prepared and served. Explore the everyday foodways of working and middling residents, the elaborate dining customs of the city’s elite, and the essential labor and culinary knowledge of enslaved people. Enjoy period-inspired tastes and sensory experiences along the way while discovering Annapolis’s past through its kitchens, markets, and tables!
