The Annapolis Film Society invites audiences to discover one of the strangest and most unforgettable true stories of modern urban living with a screening of Secret Mall Apartment on Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, in the Bowen Theater at Maryland Hall’s Goldstein Cunitz Film and New Media Center. Executive Producer of the film is Jesse Eisenberg. Directed by Jeremy Workman, who previously brought his film MAGICAL UNIVERSE to the Annapolis Film Festival.
SYNOPSIS
In 2003, eight young Rhode Islanders pulled off a stunt that became part social experiment, part art project, and part act of defiance. They discovered a hidden space deep inside the Providence Place Mall and secretly transformed it into a livable apartment. Over the next four years, they smuggled in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even built a brick wall with a locking door — hauling in more than two tons of cinderblock, all under the noses of mall security. But Secret Mall Apartment is more than a prank. For the residents, the 750-square-foot hideaway became a bold creative statement, a rebellion against creeping gentrification, and a playful act of resistance against corporate conformity. Equal parts hilarious, subversive, and inspiring, the film is a reminder of the power of imagination to reclaim space — even in the most unlikely of places.
