Story Tapestries: Regie Cabico and the ST Ensemble

  • About the Artist:

    Regie Cabico is a spoken word pioneer having won The Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam and later taking top prizes in three National Poetry Slams. Television credits include 2 seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam, NPR's Snap Judgement & MTV's Free Your Mind. His work appears in over 30 anthologies including Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Café, Spoken Word Revolution & The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry. Mr. Cabico received the 2006 Writers for Writers Award from Poets & Writers for his work teaching at-risk youth at Bellevue Hospital. As a theater artist, he received three New York Innovative Theater Award Nominations for his work in Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind with a win for Best Performance Art Production. The Kenyon Review recently named Regie Cabico the "Lady Gaga of Poetry" and he has been listed in BUST magazine's 100 Men We Love. Regie has supported program design and development and has written and received a number of grants to support programs.

      Description:

      How does a young Filipino American boy, growing up in Southern Maryland escape the silver queen cornfields and hold of his Catholic immigrant mother. After seeing the movie Fame, Regie is determined to get to New York City. With sharp character dialogue and comedic timing, the NPR Storyteller and spoken word artist blends slam poetry into the coming of age story My Hoprah.

    • When I Stepped on a Lego, a Mermaid Discovered a Chicken Sandwich

      Description:

      A poetic monologue of surreal dreams unfolds as Mr. Regie discovers a magical lego block of poetry and a kaleidoscopic array of poetic devices and magical creatures emerge. This solo play dazzles young audiences with Cabico’s quicksilver delivery and comedic character work. Inspired by bedtime stories told to his nephew, Kieran, the play connects generations of Filipino warriors and wordsmiths to the art of creative language and rhythm.

    • WHEN I SAY POETRY YOU SAY ROCKS

      Description:

      In these spoken word performance workshops, participants will use “imagery” to create a poem that incorporates pop culture & autobiography to celebrate "who we are” by exploring our dreams and our most fanciful urges. We will combine outrageous lies into hyperbole and use sense memory and experimental wordplay to invigorate our language.

      1 - 12 and Senior Adults

      Program Costs:

      $650 - $750 single performance; $850 - $1000 back-to-back performances
      $875 author’s visit and performance
      $200 - $225 single workshops; $950/ for a day of 5 workshops back to back; $4750 for a full week of workshops

      Planning and Evaluation Meetings: For Residencies = $200 per meeting (1 artist plus 1 staff member)
      Curricula Planning Hours may be added at a rate of $150 per hour if deemed necessary.

      Travel requirements or restrictions:

      Federal Mileage rates will be included to and from the location each day of the engagement.

      Additional Notes:

      For those schools that need 100% financial support to afford a program, there are new financial opportunities that we can avail to serve those needs. NO school, NO child should be denied an artist at their school due to funding constraints
