Join us as we ponder the meaning of the Annapolis Liberty Tree, which was felled in 1999 after lording over St. John’s College’s front lawn for more than three centuries. A witness tree, it was the site of meetings of the Sons of Liberty prior to the revolution. More recently, it was the backdrop for scores of graduations.  

Today, amid the 250th anniversary of the United States, what should we make of the tree’s absence? Is this a time to reconsider our notions of liberty? These questions are central to Braceli’s project, though the question he has chosen to pose is more poetic and enigmatic: “Can you whisper to me, the last breath of a tree?”

This project takes the form of a temporary outdoor sculpture on the college’s front lawn, and a related installation in the main gallery. This fall, stay tuned for a series of community-driven “whisper conversations” inside the installation.
