The Arts Council Virtual Art Gallery Series Featuring AAC Artist: Jeanne Fryer

Jeanne lives near Annapolis, MD where she paints in her studio on Cornfield Creek. Her interests in art began as a child, drawing animals and people, painting in watercolors and eventually oils. She attended the University of Maryland where she earned a BA in Fine Arts. While raising her family, Jeanne’s interest in art expanded to teaching art to children, through Girl Scouts, church groups, her own children and now her grandchildren, while continuing to develop her own work.

Jeanne painted for many years in watercolor and in oils. During this time her work was largely representational and began evolving with more expression incorporated with representation. Her most recent work includes abstract painting in oils and acrylics as well as representational work.

“My inspiration comes from playful interpretation of nature through paint on canvas.”

Jeanne’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and private collections.

The Arts Council Virtual Art Gallery Series Featuring AAC Artist: Tony Spencer

Tony Jerome Spencer was born, raised, and educated in Anne Arundel County. While attending Northeast Senior High School in Pasadena, Maryland, he developed a love for creating visual art.

Two years after graduating from Northeast High School, Spencer became a member of the United States Marine Corps, from 1971-1973, where he served as a Presidential Honor Guard in Washington, DC and later as a docent and sentry at the United States Naval Academy and Naval Base in Annapolis, Maryland.
In 1974, he joined the Annapolis Fire Department and became the first certified African American Paramedic, Arson Investigator, and later the department’s first Maryland Certified Public Information Officer. Tony also served as faculty at the University of Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute in College Park, Maryland. Spencer was also one of four Annapolitans to carry the Olympic Torch during the 1996 International Olympic Games.

He obtained both a Bachelor of Arts (1997) and Master’s in Public Administration degrees (2011) from Sojourner/Douglass College in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tony is also a performing and vocal recording artist, composer, a poet, a model, and a storyteller. He is the founder of A. J. Spencer Consultants, LLC, Enrapture Records and manages a performing artist career which has included appearances with the Jimmy Smith Trio, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, War, The Soul Stirrers, The Dixie Humming Birds, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, James Cleveland, and Shirley Caesar; participated in the music ministry for the Fishnet Festival with Larry & Bobbi Andes (1986-90), where he sang with “Joy Ministries” and shared in ministry with BeBe & CeCe Winans, Larnelle Harris, Amy Grant, Bill Gaither, Carmen, Jesse Dixon, Twila Paris, Marlon Le Fevor, Michael W. Smith, and many others.

Spencer has also sung with various entities locally and internationally including Dr. J. Ernest Green and the Annapolis Chorale, The Calgary Alberta Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra in Tampa. In Alba, Italy, Tony performed the Mozart, Motown and More Concert with Stefan Scaggiari, John Starr, Sue Matthews, Frank Russo, Brian Ganz and other international artists at the 2003 Saluzzo Spring Festival, accompanied by St. Mary’s College singers and musicians. In February ‘06’ Tony accompanied pianist Stefan Scaggiari to Stef’’s hometown of Evansville, Indiana, to perform the Mozart, Motown and More concert with the Evansville Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

Along with his poetic, visual and vocal gifts, Tony is a freelance model and has performed in local and regional theater: Working, Celebrations, The Lion and Fox, The Meeting with Kevin McClavain and Greg Alan Williams of Bay Watch, Remember the Titans, Finian’s Rainbow, with Dr. J. Ernest Green, and recently, Emancipation Revisited, and Emancipation Continues: War & Peace, written and directed by Dr. Vivian Gist Spencer, in association with the Northern Arundel Cultural Preservation Society (NACPS).

The Arts Council Virtual Art Gallery Series Featuring AAC Artist: Merrilyne Hendrickson

“I paint with primarily watercolors, which started on vacation travels replacing my camera. I found these quick sketchy works took me back instantly to the way it felt and looked. My work is almost abstract or at least very impressionistic. They are paintings of the essence of what was there not a picture. Even my pet portraits are like that. The softness of their fur, the life in their eyes……. The beauty of nature surrounds me and inspires me. The changing colors in the sky and reflections in the water are especially magical at sunrise and sundown. I try to capture the luminosity in my watercolor paintings. The SLICES are slivers or a narrow sampling of the whole range or subject. In these, an actual object is unimportant to the feeling of a moment in time and light. I live and paint in Annapolis so architectural landmarks are often subjects. I enjoy the discipline of rendering but hope to impart something more than a picture.”

Artist: Susan Picard
I have worked in the arts my entire life, but practical economics led me to a career in nursing as an RN. Upon leaving that profession, I was able to work full time and pursue my passion for painting. Much of my work reflects my interest in the human figure. I have a studio in Annapolis at Local by Design at the Gallery. While there, I began to paint floral still life and recently have ventured into landscapes. I have exhibited and am in collections both locally and in Florida.

The Arts Council Virtual Art Gallery Series Featuring AAC Artist: Mike Clemens

Artist: Michael Clemens

Mike was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School on Duke of Gloucester Street and later Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.

Mike fell in love with photography starting in 1983 when he moved to Bermuda for a job opportunity. Bermuda had a serene, inspiring beauty which he wanted to capture with a camera. It began as a hobby and grew into much more. Photography has taken him across America to some of the most beautiful places on the continent.

Mike’s photographs have appeared in numerous shows around the area including those sponsored by the Digital Photo Club of Annapolis. Among those locations are City Hall of Annapolis, Ginger Cove, Woods Presbyterian Church of Severna Park, Maryland Hall For the Creative Arts and Hospice of the Chesapeake. His work has also been shown in numerous ACAAC exhibits at BWI Airport, Anne Arundel Medical Center and the lobby of What’s Up Magazine. He has had pictures published in the Baltimore Sun.

Mike loves capturing the beauty and essence of the American landscape. He also does portrait photography for organizations, groups and individuals.

He and his wife reside in Crownsville, Maryland.

Monica Hawse – Photographer

Monica Hawse has loved taking pictures since she was a young girl, but it was only after her retirement from a long and rewarding technical career as a Computer Scientist that she began to seriously study photography. She loves to photograph all aspects of nature: animals, flowers, trees, little creatures, nature scenes, and people. One of her greatest joys is to share the wonder of nature she has captured with her photography.

Monica is a member of several local camera clubs and is so appreciative for all she has learned from the leaders and members. They include the Annapolis Photography Workshop Group, Bowie-Crofton Camera Club, Muddy Creek Artists Guild, and Maryland Federation of Art. Her work has been displayed at The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County (at What’s Up? Media, BWI Airport, and Anne Arundel Medical Center), Maryland Federation of Art, Bowie City Hall with the Bowie Arts Committee, and the Kent Island Federation of Art.

“I am inspired by beauty, and I paint because it is adventurous and optimistic. I have always loved diving into the unknown, and I do that with every new painting and every stroke. The process of discovery and creation brings me joy, and my goal is to create works that do the same for others.

Vibrant color and energetic designs move my soul. Most of my work is lyrical abstract expression with a constant underlying theme of sharp contrast and lightness of spirit. Creating large energetic works with a back and forth of addition and subtraction is invigorating and exciting, and I balance that with the zen and meditative process of creating smaller works of abstractions of animals and the natural world as well as urban environments.”
