SUMMARY:EXPERIENCE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY at AACC
DESCRIPTION:EXPERIENCE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY\nMonday\, Oct. 12\n\n\n\n\n11 a.m.-noon | The Art Hub (CALT 134) \nHands-On Workshop: Exploring Woodland Indian Heritage with Katherine Gill (programs manager at Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area) and Andrew Webster (preservation stewardship program manager with Anne Arundel County’s Cultural Resources Section).\nProgram exploring the history and cultural heritage of Woodland Indians in the Chesapeake region. Guest speakers Webster and Gill will share insights into the lives and traditions of Indigenous peoples in our area. Participants will also create a paper replica of a Woodland Indian lodge house. This event is a collaboration between Art History and Anthropology\, with support and funding from the Office of Student Engagement.\n\n12:30 p.m. | (CALT 100) \nTom Farris (Cherokee and Otoe-Missouria) in conversation with Todd Richardson\nArtist Tom Farris in conversation with Todd Richardson\, James R. Schumacher chair of ethics at the University of Nebraska\, Omaha. They will discuss Farris’s work as a reflection of the modern perspective on the Native experience operating within a dominant culture. Farris’s exhibition\, “Tom Farris: alterNative\,” is on view in the CADE Gallery through Oct. 22. This event is co-sponsored by the CADE Gallery and the IDEAL Office.\n\n1:30 p.m. | (CALT 100)\nConversation with visual artists Kristin Gentry\n(Choctaw Nation) and Kindra Swafford (Cherokee)\, moderated by Tom Farris.\nKristin Gentry and Kindra Swafford\, both of whom identify as Two-Spirit\, will discuss their work and backgrounds. This event is co-sponsored by the CADE Gallery and the IDEAL Office.\n\n2:30 p.m. | (CALT 100)\nLecture on Indigenous foodways by Drew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pocomoke Indian Nation)\nDrew Shuptar-Rayvis\, of the Pocomoke Indian Nation\, a living historian\, will present a lecture on Maryland’s Indigenous foodways. This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.\n \nOct. 14\, 5-6:30 p.m. | (CRSC 129)\nCLAW Community Seminar (XFD-493-902)\nThe Center for Liberal Arts Work (CLAW) will host a seminar with Brandy Whitlock on the poetry of Joy Harjo (Muscogee).
