The Tempest

After last summer’s critically-acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the historic grounds of the Charles Carroll House, the Annapolis Shakespeare Company (ASC) returns with another timeless Shakespearean classic, The Tempest.

Widely considered one of Shakespeare’s greatest works, The Tempest is a lyrical play that tells the story of Prospero, an exiled duke who lives as the master of an enchanted isle where fantastical creatures, mystery, music and romance abound. A shipwreck delivers Prospero’s enemies to the island, and the plot thickens when his beloved daughter falls for the enemy’s son. It’s a magical tale about the transformative power of forgiveness and the bond between parent and child.

Annapolis Shakespeare Theater’s Remaining Summer Performances

The Annapolis Shakespeare Company is one of the premier organizations in Annapolis dedicated to bringing classical theater to the area. It may be too late to catch the company’s excellent adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed in the gardens of the Charles Carroll House but there are still several more opportunities to see classical theater in Annapolis this summer. From August 5th through 21st the group is holding its “Summer Staged Reading Repertory Series,” where Donald Hicken, one half of the directorial team behind the group’s performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, brings to life Henry James’ novella, The Turn of the Screw. The adaptation is sure to convey the supernatural elements and suspense of James’ original 19th century novella. The performances will be held at ASC’s Studio 11.
Additionally, running until September 27th is the Company’s adaptation of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).” Danielle Angeline from DCMetroTheaterArts has given the adaptation a five star review and claims that director, Sally Boyett, has cast the roles brilliantly. Angeline states “Sally Boyet, Founding Director of Annapolis Shakespeare Company, has perfectly cast the individual roles and directs them into a cohesive ensemble that is simply captivating.” Performances of this critically lauded adaptation of Shakespeare’s complete works are held Tuesday evenings at Reynolds Tavern’s Pub in the outdoor courtyard. Tickets can be purchased and more information can be found on the Annapolis Shakespeare Company’s website at annapolisshakespeare.org.
