Presented by Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Art Museum
Dates: October 26, 2024 at 6:00 pm to 7:00 pmIn support of the exhibition, Theatre of Turmoil, the Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Art Museum is honored to welcome Goya scholar and former Museum Director, Janis Tomlinson, to present an original lecture on the artwork of Francisco Goya. During this talk, she will trace the evolution of cruelty in selected works by Goya, including Desastres de la Guerra, The Second and Third of May, 1808, the Disparates, and selected “Black” paintings. Through an exploration of this work, we hope to shed light on the questions underpinning the exhibition: why are we interested in seeing unsettling art? And how may it help us cope with war, suffering, grief, and profound loss?
