Banneker-Douglass Museum Exhibit Opening Reception: The Radical Voice of Blackness Speaks of Resistance and Joy

November 10 @ 6:00 pm

You are invited to join us as we celebrate the museum’s newest exhibit, The Radical Voice of Blackness Speaks of Resistance and Joy. In collaboration with world renowned curator, Myrtis Bedolla, the Banneker-Douglass Museum will feature works by fifteen Black Maryland-based artists and portraits from BDM’s Fine Art collection. On this day attendees will enjoy art, music, light fare, the museum’s permanent exhibits and of course, each other!
About the Exhibit:
The Radical Voice of Blackness Speaks of Resistance and Joy explores America’s fraught history of racial discrimination while paying tribute to the freedom fighters, past and present, who, through a lifetime commitment or single act of bravery, have asserted, declared, and validated Black truth. Celebrated is the determination and resiliency of Black people to maintain their civility despite systems of oppression and social-political constraints.
Investigated through paintings, photographs, prints, videos, and conceptual works by Black Maryland-based artists are notions of resistance and joy, imagery that gives voice to the voiceless and dispossessed. Presented are thought-provoking narratives that serve as a conversation on Black empowerment while sanctioning and proclaiming Blackness and its humanity.
Featured Artists: Devin Allen, Tawny Chatmon, Wesley Clark, Larry Cook, Oletha DeVane, Edward D. Ghee, Sr., Phylicia Ghee, Jerrell Gibbs, Curlee Holton, Monica Ikegwu, Megan Lewis, Charles Mason, III, Wendel Patrick, Joyce Scott, and Chrystal Seawood. Also included are commissioned portraits of Benjamin Banneker, Frederick Douglass, Lillie Carroll Jackson, and Harriet Tubman by Hughie Lee-Smith and a portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. by Nathaniel Gibbs from the Banneker-Douglass Museum’s Fine Art Collection.
