SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

SUMMARY:Miguel Braceli: UNBURIAL
DESCRIPTION:Unburial treats absence as a site for learning and reflection. The void left by the Liberty Tree becomes more than metaphor: an art intervention transforms it into a place to be repurposed and reclaimed through rituals and celebrations that probe what freedom means today. \nOn the front lawn\, where the Liberty Tree once stood\, the artist Miguel Braceli has installed a 40′-diameter circle of cemetery vases filled with common wildflowers. It calls attention to the tree’s absence and reclaims it as a tree for all people\, not just the privileged and elite (e.g.\, the Sons of Liberty and the four Annapolis signers of the Declaration of Independence). \nIn the museum\, Braceli\, with a team of fabricators\, created three enormous murals and two other works. The murals perform an autopsy of the tree. The largest multiplies the tulip poplar’s distinctive leaf shape across a 33′-long wall in a wind-swept swirl of energy (the leaves were made from stencils of the Liberty Tree scion’s actual leaves). A second mural abstracts the tree’s tangled root system into a water-bearing drawing (using PVC tubing) that sprouts purple carnations. The third mural’s subject is the tree’s massive trunk\, which was cut to pieces in 1999\, with much of the wood later finding commemorative as Liberty Tree guitars\, conference tables\, and bible boxes. Onto nine chalkboards\, Braceli has mounted nine pieces of raw wood\, each supporting live orchids. What can we learn anew from this tree?\, it seems to ask. \nThe two other works urge us to turn away from nation-state identities and to look and listen more closely to nature. A sculptural ear is mounted onto the red silhouette of a rose petal\, borrowed from the work of Columbia-born\, Venezuela-based artist Roberto Obregoń. Nearby\, a flag of yellow roses hangs from a flagpole that has been fabricated from a branch. \nAdmission & Hours \nFree & open to the public \nWednesday\, Thursday\, Saturday\, and Sunday\, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nOpen Fridays\, 12 to 7:30 p.m. \nParking & Accessibility \nFree parking is available on campus after 5 p.m. during the week and all day on weekends. Handicap parking spots are located in the Edensword Parking lot off of St. John’s Street between College Avenue and Calvert Street (at the yellow house). The museum is located on the ground floor of Mellon Hall. \nPresented in collaboration with Annapolis Pride\, Historic Annapolis\, and the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs. Major funding for this project was provided by Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area.

SUMMARY:Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis
DESCRIPTION:The idea of this exhibition is grounded in a question: what is the difference between being looked at versus being witnessed? Between being invasively surveilled versus deeply seen? \nMarina Abramović and Lynda Benglis — with Rest Energy (1980) and Lynda Benglis’ Monitor (1999)\, respectively — explore what it costs us to trust each other and how important it is that we do. As we watch these two videos unfold\, we are invited to sit with how much social cynicism deteriorates us\, if we allow it to take over and transform our will to trust into one to control. As an antidote to this\, each artist seems to posit that we must instead relinquish control if we hope to be loved. Love\, then\, becomes indistinguishable from the act of choosing not to monitor someone fearfully\, but to witness them vulnerably. \nIt is a terrifying and brave\, humbling and life-giving choice. We hope watching these works of art help it become easier to make. \nFunding for this project was provided by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt\, and the Arts Council for Anne Arundel County.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - USNA Band's Superintendent's Combo - Birth of the Cool: A Miles Davis Tribute
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Naval Academy Band’s Superintendent’s Combo presents a performance highlighting music from the iconic 1957 jazz album Birth of the Cool. The concert celebrates 2026 as the 250th year of the United States of America and the 100th anniversary of the birthday of one of the most important and influential American musicians in the world\, Miles Davis (1926-1991). \nThe ethereal\, and at times mysterious\, Birth of the Cool arrangements showed Davis in compelling and creative collaboration with arrangers Gerry Mulligan\, Gil Evans\, John Lewis and Johnny Carisi. One hundred years after Davis’s birth\, these modern USNA musicians keep that creative spirit alive. Listeners will hear an arrangement of “Nardis” by SF Jazz Collective\, original arrangements of “Blue in Green” and “Dr. Jackle\,” and much more. The USNA Band has performed simlar celebratory programs this year at leading DMV jazz venues and promises to entertain and satisfy both seasoned jazz fans and adventurous new listeners. \nUSNA musicians have included Latin Grammy winners and high-charting recording artists. Members have studied at prominent music schools and conservatories nationwide and have extensive experience as performers and educators. The band was formed in November of 1852 by order of the Secretary of the Navy. Its primary mission is to provide musical support to the Superintendent\, Commandant\, and Brigade of Midshipmen. These dedicated professionals are known across the nation as “The Navy’s Oldest and Finest Band!” \nThe band has appeared at Baltimore’s Keystone Korner\, The Pullo Center in York\, PA\, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage\, the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Jazz Festival\, the Frederick Festival of the Arts and for numerous concert series in the Mid-Atlantic region. \nBand Members for this program include: \nMU1 Eric Vazquez: Tenor Sax \nMU1 Aaron Stone: Trumpet \nMUCS Colin Renick: Baritone/Alto Sax \nMU1 Tyler Tolles: Vibes/ Auxiliary Percussion \nMU1 Konrad Malinowski: Guitar \nMU1 Will Camps: Bass \nMUCS Brandon May: Piano \nMU1 William Tillman: Drums \nThis is a FREE admission show\, but advance reservations are strongly recommended. The evening includes an award presentation\, concert and reception.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Vanessa Racci: Italian Contributions to American Jazz
DESCRIPTION:NY jazz vocalist and recording artist Vanessa Racci is coming to Annapolis to talk about Italian contributions to American jazz over the past 100 Years. She’ll deliver one of the festival’s popular library lectures on Saturday morning of Weekend Two. \nIn the late 1800s and early 1900s\, Italian and Sicilians immigrated to New Orleans in droves and the socio-political environment for them was complicated. This new immigrant group interacted closely with African Americans\, facing similar discrimination. Their unique position and use of European instruments would play a role in shaping early jazz\, but there is much more to the story. \nRacci will show and tell how Italian Americans from New Orleans have contributed to the genre from inception to modern times – from Nick LaRocca and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to Leon Roppolo and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings in the 1920s to the Northern migration of jazz and beyond. Many jazz fans will be surprised to learn that Harry Warren was born Salvatore Antonio Guaragna. He contributed over 800 tunes to the great American Songbook! Listeners will learn of key musicians who are largely unknown today along with those whose work is widely celebrated\, such as Henry Mancini\, Frank Sinatra and Chick Corea. \nVanessa Racci has performed at such venues as Birdland and Gracie Mansion as well as the White Plains Jazz Festival and Scranton Jazz Festival. She has lectured at Rutgers University\, The Generoso Pope Italian American Cultural Center and The Italian American Museum of NYC. She has been a recipient of the Helen Hayes Award\, the Donna Distinta Award and the NOIAW Wise Woman Award. Audience members will be surprised at what they hear and leave feeling informed and satisfied with newfound knowledge and sense of appreciation. \nPresentations like this one at the Eastport-Annapolis Neck Library have been enormously popular since year one of festival. Enjoy music\, photography\, some book learning and a lively discussion led by an ebullient\, award-winning jazz artist. Bring your curiosity and your questions and come on out!
