SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

SUMMARY:Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? People\, Places\, and Passing Moments
DESCRIPTION:LONGTIME CAPITAL GAZETTE PHOTOGRAPHER PAUL W. GILLESPIE PRESENTS\nEvery Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? \nExhibition of street portraits\, cosmic images and photographs capturing people\, places and passing moments opens Sept. 10 at Chesapeake Arts Center \nPhotography doesn’t end when Paul W. Gillespie’s workday does.\nFor more than three decades\, Gillespie has worked as a newspaper photojournalist\, photographing\nassignments throughout Anne Arundel County and beyond. But photography has never been limited to his\nwork. For years\, he has continued to photograph simply because it is how he experiences the world—from\nthe moon overhead to the people and passing moments he encounters on the street.\nThat personal work is at the heart of his new solo exhibition\, Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? People\,\nPlaces\, and Passing Moments\, opening Sept. 10 at the Patricia Barland Gallery at Chesapeake Arts Center.\nThe exhibition runs Sept. 10 through Nov. 8\, 2026\, with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10.\nThe exhibition brings together Gillespie’s street portraits and work made primarily over the past several\nyears\, along with photographs of musicians\, places and fleeting moments that caught his attention. It also\nincludes photographs of the moon\, a subject dear to his heart. A selection of images from his Journalists\nMatter: Faces of the Capital Gazette project connects the exhibition to an important chapter of his life while\nkeeping the focus on the broader range of work he has made away from his newspaper assignments.\n“Photography doesn’t end when my workday does\,” Gillespie said. “I’ve been doing this for so long that it’s\nreally more a way of life than a job. I see someone or something that makes me stop. If it’s a person\, I want\nto meet them\, learn about them and\, hopefully\, capture something of their story in my photographs so I can\nshare it with others. My hope is that by sharing those stories\, we might become a little more understanding\nand empathetic toward one another.”\nGillespie’s approach remains rooted in the idea of photography as capturing a moment that existed in front\nof his camera. His photographs are\, above all\, records of moments he encountered and chose to preserve.\nAt the center of much of his work are the people he meets and the stories they carry\, with each photograph\nan attempt to convey something of who they are and what makes them worth seeing.\nThat approach is particularly evident in Gillespie’s street portraits\, many of which began with encounters\nthat developed into relationships over time. Rather than simply documenting a face\, he looks for a\nphotograph that can give viewers a glimpse of the person behind it.\nThe exhibition’s title reflects Gillespie’s belief that photographs can carry stories beyond the moment in\nwhich they were made. Sometimes the story is found in the circumstances surrounding the photograph.\nSometimes it is in the person looking back at the camera. And sometimes it is simply the moment itself.\nAfter three decades spent photographing assignments for newspapers\, Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t\nIt? offers Gillespie the opportunity to show viewers what he photographs when nobody is assigning the\nstory.\nGillespie is also available for an artist talk or panel discussion in connection with the exhibition. \nEXHIBITION INFORMATION\nEvery Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? SUMMARY:Miguel Braceli: UNBURIAL
DESCRIPTION:Unburial treats absence as a site for learning and reflection. The void left by the Liberty Tree becomes more than metaphor: an art intervention transforms it into a place to be repurposed and reclaimed through rituals and celebrations that probe what freedom means today. \nOn the front lawn\, where the Liberty Tree once stood\, the artist Miguel Braceli has installed a 40′-diameter circle of cemetery vases filled with common wildflowers. It calls attention to the tree’s absence and reclaims it as a tree for all people\, not just the privileged and elite (e.g.\, the Sons of Liberty and the four Annapolis signers of the Declaration of Independence). \nIn the museum\, Braceli\, with a team of fabricators\, created three enormous murals and two other works. The murals perform an autopsy of the tree. The largest multiplies the tulip poplar’s distinctive leaf shape across a 33′-long wall in a wind-swept swirl of energy (the leaves were made from stencils of the Liberty Tree scion’s actual leaves). A second mural abstracts the tree’s tangled root system into a water-bearing drawing (using PVC tubing) that sprouts purple carnations. The third mural’s subject is the tree’s massive trunk\, which was cut to pieces in 1999\, with much of the wood later finding commemorative as Liberty Tree guitars\, conference tables\, and bible boxes. Onto nine chalkboards\, Braceli has mounted nine pieces of raw wood\, each supporting live orchids. What can we learn anew from this tree?\, it seems to ask. \nThe two other works urge us to turn away from nation-state identities and to look and listen more closely to nature. A sculptural ear is mounted onto the red silhouette of a rose petal\, borrowed from the work of Columbia-born\, Venezuela-based artist Roberto Obregoń. Nearby\, a flag of yellow roses hangs from a flagpole that has been fabricated from a branch. \nAdmission & Hours \nFree & open to the public \nWednesday\, Thursday\, Saturday\, and Sunday\, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nOpen Fridays\, 12 to 7:30 p.m. \nParking & Accessibility \nFree parking is available on campus after 5 p.m. during the week and all day on weekends. Handicap parking spots are located in the Edensword Parking lot off of St. John’s Street between College Avenue and Calvert Street (at the yellow house). The museum is located on the ground floor of Mellon Hall. \nPresented in collaboration with Annapolis Pride\, Historic Annapolis\, and the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs. Major funding for this project was provided by Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area.

SUMMARY:Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis
DESCRIPTION:The idea of this exhibition is grounded in a question: what is the difference between being looked at versus being witnessed? Between being invasively surveilled versus deeply seen? \nMarina Abramović and Lynda Benglis — with Rest Energy (1980) and Lynda Benglis’ Monitor (1999)\, respectively — explore what it costs us to trust each other and how important it is that we do. As we watch these two videos unfold\, we are invited to sit with how much social cynicism deteriorates us\, if we allow it to take over and transform our will to trust into one to control. As an antidote to this\, each artist seems to posit that we must instead relinquish control if we hope to be loved. Love\, then\, becomes indistinguishable from the act of choosing not to monitor someone fearfully\, but to witness them vulnerably. \nIt is a terrifying and brave\, humbling and life-giving choice. We hope watching these works of art help it become easier to make. \nFunding for this project was provided by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt\, and the Arts Council for Anne Arundel County.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival -William Kelly\, Ph.D. - Slavery and Indenture in Colonial Times
DESCRIPTION:White and Black Marylanders often worked shoulder-to-shoulder as indentured servants in the early 1600s—laboring for years until their terms expired and they were free to pursue their own wealth and status. As the century wore on\, however\, colonial lawmakers restricted Black life\, establishing hereditary\, race-based chattel slavery in the colony. Interracial relationships were restricted and Blacks seeking freedom were brutally punished. Enslaving became a status symbol embraced by Maryland elites like Cecil Calvert\, Second Lord Baltimore. His official portrait from 1669 includes an unnamed enslaved Black boy. Why was the boy’s image removed when the portrait was recreated in 1910? \nLearn more from Dr. William F. Kelly\, historian and Research Archivist with the Legacy of Slavery in Maryland project at the Maryland State Archives. Using sources preserved for public use at the Archives\, he’ll describe the history of enslavement in seventeenth-century Maryland – as well as its lingering legacies.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Perkutao Afro Peruvian Jazz
DESCRIPTION:THE BAND \nAfro Peruvian jazz group Perkutao was founded in Lima\, Peru in 2005 by percussionist\, dancer and educator Percy Chinchilla. The group recently relocated to the U.S.\, giving new audiences an opportunity to experience the magic of their unique sound. Rooted in Afro-Peruvian traditions\, their music also incorporates Afro-Cuban influences and various contemporary styles. The result is intriguing and compelling. \nPercy Chinchilla grew up in the legendary Callejón del Buque\, where the Afro-Peruvian cajón could be heard daily alongside guitars\, singers\, and other percussion instruments. At a young age\, he won percussion and dance awards and was asked to tour Latin America with top Peruvian artists. He dreamt of someday launching his own ensemble to express his culture in a modern and sophisticated way\, on par with other African Diasporic traditions. \nAfter studying global percussion traditions for over 20 years\, the group’s drummer\, Robin Axel\, was drawn to the same vibrant music which embraces both innovation and tradition. Today Chinchilla and Axel work together to bring this music across the globe. They are joined by other stellar players: Peruvian Paolo Valdivia on guitar\, Gabriel Vivas (from Venezuela) on bass and Baltimore trumpeter Leo Maxey. Their enticing music and intriguing stories will likely be new to the ears of most listeners. \nTHE PROGRAM \nPerkutao has performed numerous times at the National Theater of Peru. In 2022\, Perkutao joined legendary Cuban group Los Munequitos de Matanzas to celebrate the group’s 70th anniversary in Matanzas\, Cuba. In the Washington\, D.C. area\, they’ve appeared at Blues Alley\, Takoma Station and Mr. Henry’s. Their debut album\, Mis Ancestros\, was produced by acclaimed percussionist Manongo Mujica. \nTheir festival performances at Peerless Rens Club will be intriguing. “Mayoral” by Wilfredo Franco Laguna is a Festejo\, the most emblematic and popular style of Afro-Peruvian dance music. Made famous by singer Lucila Campos\, the song is about the resistance of Afro Peruvians during the period of slavery in Peru. It opens with a chorus representing an intense call against a slave master and features a duet between the cajon and drum set. \nComposed by Cairo Soto\, “Toro Mata” has been recorded by Peruvian musicians\, the great Celia Cruz and other salsa performers. It is originally a lando\, a traditionally slow\, syncopated genre in 6-8 time. It features the cajon\, quijada de burro (donkey jawbone)\, and the checo (a gourd drum). The song mocks the Spanish and Europeans who dominated Peruvian society in colonial and post-colonial Peru. The dance parodies the European waltz; the lyrics symbolically portray Spain as a bull who will face an unhappy ending. \nComposed by Perkutao drummer Robin Axel in the Zamacueca style\, “Callejon Nocturno” is reminiscent of the alleys in Lima\, where Afro Peruvian culture took root and Perkutao was created. The song features solos by all group members and combines modern jazz harmonies and melodies with Peruvian rhythms.

SUMMARY:FORCES OF NATURE
DESCRIPTION:Luke Soneral An Overture: The Mouse and its Shadow\nReinaldo Moya Vestido de Mar\, with violinist Francesca Anderegg\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky The Tempest\, Op. 18\nIgor Stravinsky Divertimento from Le baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) \nThis concert is approximately 2 hours in length\, with a 20 minute intermission. \nIn Forces of Nature\, the natural world becomes a source of wonder\, reflection\, and transformation. Emerging composer Luke Soneral opens the program with An Overture: The Mouse and Its Shadow\, offering an exciting glimpse of orchestral music’s future. Reinaldo Moya’s ocean-inspired violin concerto\, Vestido de Mar\, brings violinist Francesca Anderegg to the stage for a work that reflects the landscapes and experiences of the Americas. Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest turns Shakespeare’s storm into a powerful exploration of human nature\, while Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss honors Tchaikovsky through the wintry world of Hans Christian Andersen. Together\, these works reveal nature as both an elemental force and a mirror of our inner lives.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday afternoon\, David & Ginger Hildebrand will deliver a fascinating program performing music written for and about Lafayette. Composed from the 1770s – 1820s\, the tunes illustrate his enormous popularity in the New World. When Lafayette came from France to America during the Revolutionary war\, his given title was Marquis. Once made a general in the Continental army\, he renounced his noble title\, took on the title General Lafayette and became a beloved figure in American history. \nCopious evidence of his 1824-25 tour survives in prints and paintings\, commemorative items\, poetry and pamphlets as well as published descriptions of speeches\, toasts\, parades\, fireworks and triumphal arches. Yet the performing arts\, most notably music and dance\, survive to rekindle the past excitement and mood of that day – that America is great because of its awesome democratic institutions and larger-than-life heroes: Lafayette and Washington. Period songs\, dance tunes and marches resonate with such affirmation down the centuries. \nArranged from period sources\, some songs involve newly composed music and lyrics; others are parodies – new lyrics set to old familiar tunes. “Yankee Doodle” and “Auld Lang Syne” were common melodic choices. You’ll hear how the latter tune was used to honor Lafayette’s presence during the Revolutionary battle at Brandywine\, Pennsylvania. As the artists sample later decades of music\, listeners will come to appreciate how American music of the 1820s served to express many of the thoughts and hopes of Americans long ago. The stimulating program will be a treat to the eyes as well as the ears. It is rendered on a delightful array of period instruments such as harpsichord\, Baroque and English guitars\, English flute\, violin and hammered dulcimer. Sit back\, listen\, learn and enjoy!

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Maryland Hall Presents- Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:Drummer\, composer and producer\, “beat scientist” Makaya McCraven reshapes jazz by bringing improvisation together with hip-hop production and musical traditions from around the world.\n“Makaya McCraven is a prolific drummer\, composer and producer. An artist who has been aptly called a “cultural synthesizer\,” McCraven has a unique gift for collapsing space\, destroying borders and blending past\, present\, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre\, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice\, Rolling Stone\, The Guardian\, and NPR\, among other publications\, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of progressive music. According to the New York Times\, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.”\nBorn in Paris in the Autumn of 1983 to Hungarian singer and flutist Ágnes Zsigmondi and African- American expat jazz drummer Stephen McCraven\, Makaya was raised in a vibrant\, creative community in the Northampton\, Massachusetts area\, where his father often played with artists like saxophonist and ethnomusicologist Marion Brown\, multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef\, and saxophonist Archie Shepp. That scene\, with its enticing blend of cultures\, helped establish his philosophy around jazz as folk music. Meanwhile\, his mother’s music blended Eastern European folk traditions\, concurrently shaping his conceptions about the role of music in building and reflecting communities”[excerpted from https://www.intlanthem.com/artists/makaya-mccraven]\nExperience one of contemporary music’s most inventive artists live on Maryland Hall’s Main Stage.
