SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

SUMMARY:Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? People\, Places\, and Passing Moments
DESCRIPTION:LONGTIME CAPITAL GAZETTE PHOTOGRAPHER PAUL W. GILLESPIE PRESENTS\nEvery Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? \nExhibition of street portraits\, cosmic images and photographs capturing people\, places and passing moments opens Sept. 10 at Chesapeake Arts Center \nPhotography doesn’t end when Paul W. Gillespie’s workday does.\nFor more than three decades\, Gillespie has worked as a newspaper photojournalist\, photographing\nassignments throughout Anne Arundel County and beyond. But photography has never been limited to his\nwork. For years\, he has continued to photograph simply because it is how he experiences the world—from\nthe moon overhead to the people and passing moments he encounters on the street.\nThat personal work is at the heart of his new solo exhibition\, Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? People\,\nPlaces\, and Passing Moments\, opening Sept. 10 at the Patricia Barland Gallery at Chesapeake Arts Center.\nThe exhibition runs Sept. 10 through Nov. 8\, 2026\, with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10.\nThe exhibition brings together Gillespie’s street portraits and work made primarily over the past several\nyears\, along with photographs of musicians\, places and fleeting moments that caught his attention. It also\nincludes photographs of the moon\, a subject dear to his heart. A selection of images from his Journalists\nMatter: Faces of the Capital Gazette project connects the exhibition to an important chapter of his life while\nkeeping the focus on the broader range of work he has made away from his newspaper assignments.\n“Photography doesn’t end when my workday does\,” Gillespie said. “I’ve been doing this for so long that it’s\nreally more a way of life than a job. I see someone or something that makes me stop. If it’s a person\, I want\nto meet them\, learn about them and\, hopefully\, capture something of their story in my photographs so I can\nshare it with others. My hope is that by sharing those stories\, we might become a little more understanding\nand empathetic toward one another.”\nGillespie’s approach remains rooted in the idea of photography as capturing a moment that existed in front\nof his camera. His photographs are\, above all\, records of moments he encountered and chose to preserve.\nAt the center of much of his work are the people he meets and the stories they carry\, with each photograph\nan attempt to convey something of who they are and what makes them worth seeing.\nThat approach is particularly evident in Gillespie’s street portraits\, many of which began with encounters\nthat developed into relationships over time. Rather than simply documenting a face\, he looks for a\nphotograph that can give viewers a glimpse of the person behind it.\nThe exhibition’s title reflects Gillespie’s belief that photographs can carry stories beyond the moment in\nwhich they were made. Sometimes the story is found in the circumstances surrounding the photograph.\nSometimes it is in the person looking back at the camera. And sometimes it is simply the moment itself.\nAfter three decades spent photographing assignments for newspapers\, Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t\nIt? offers Gillespie the opportunity to show viewers what he photographs when nobody is assigning the\nstory.\nGillespie is also available for an artist talk or panel discussion in connection with the exhibition. \nEXHIBITION INFORMATION\nEvery Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? SUMMARY:Miguel Braceli: UNBURIAL
DESCRIPTION:Unburial treats absence as a site for learning and reflection. The void left by the Liberty Tree becomes more than metaphor: an art intervention transforms it into a place to be repurposed and reclaimed through rituals and celebrations that probe what freedom means today. \nOn the front lawn\, where the Liberty Tree once stood\, the artist Miguel Braceli has installed a 40′-diameter circle of cemetery vases filled with common wildflowers. It calls attention to the tree’s absence and reclaims it as a tree for all people\, not just the privileged and elite (e.g.\, the Sons of Liberty and the four Annapolis signers of the Declaration of Independence). \nIn the museum\, Braceli\, with a team of fabricators\, created three enormous murals and two other works. The murals perform an autopsy of the tree. The largest multiplies the tulip poplar’s distinctive leaf shape across a 33′-long wall in a wind-swept swirl of energy (the leaves were made from stencils of the Liberty Tree scion’s actual leaves). A second mural abstracts the tree’s tangled root system into a water-bearing drawing (using PVC tubing) that sprouts purple carnations. The third mural’s subject is the tree’s massive trunk\, which was cut to pieces in 1999\, with much of the wood later finding commemorative as Liberty Tree guitars\, conference tables\, and bible boxes. Onto nine chalkboards\, Braceli has mounted nine pieces of raw wood\, each supporting live orchids. What can we learn anew from this tree?\, it seems to ask. \nThe two other works urge us to turn away from nation-state identities and to look and listen more closely to nature. A sculptural ear is mounted onto the red silhouette of a rose petal\, borrowed from the work of Columbia-born\, Venezuela-based artist Roberto Obregoń. Nearby\, a flag of yellow roses hangs from a flagpole that has been fabricated from a branch. \nAdmission & Hours \nFree & open to the public \nWednesday\, Thursday\, Saturday\, and Sunday\, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nOpen Fridays\, 12 to 7:30 p.m. \nParking & Accessibility \nFree parking is available on campus after 5 p.m. during the week and all day on weekends. Handicap parking spots are located in the Edensword Parking lot off of St. John’s Street between College Avenue and Calvert Street (at the yellow house). The museum is located on the ground floor of Mellon Hall. \nPresented in collaboration with Annapolis Pride\, Historic Annapolis\, and the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs. Major funding for this project was provided by Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area.

SUMMARY:Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis
DESCRIPTION:The idea of this exhibition is grounded in a question: what is the difference between being looked at versus being witnessed? Between being invasively surveilled versus deeply seen? \nMarina Abramović and Lynda Benglis — with Rest Energy (1980) and Lynda Benglis’ Monitor (1999)\, respectively — explore what it costs us to trust each other and how important it is that we do. As we watch these two videos unfold\, we are invited to sit with how much social cynicism deteriorates us\, if we allow it to take over and transform our will to trust into one to control. As an antidote to this\, each artist seems to posit that we must instead relinquish control if we hope to be loved. Love\, then\, becomes indistinguishable from the act of choosing not to monitor someone fearfully\, but to witness them vulnerably. \nIt is a terrifying and brave\, humbling and life-giving choice. We hope watching these works of art help it become easier to make. \nFunding for this project was provided by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt\, and the Arts Council for Anne Arundel County.

SUMMARY:Tom Farris: alterNative
DESCRIPTION:Tom Farris: alterNative\nDates: September 15 – October 22\, 2026\nClosing Reception: Thursday\, October 22\, 4:00-6:00pm\nVisiting Artist Workshop: Wednesday\, October 21\, 1:00-3:00pm in CADE 310 \nJoin us for the Cade Gallery’s fall exhibition\, “Tom Farris: alterNative\,” featuring the work of Cherokee and Otoe-Missouria artist Tom Farris. This one-person exhibition includes work in a variety of media—digital prints\, sculpture\, paintings\, view masters\, and found object sculptures—from throughout Farris’s decades-long career. The overarching themes of Farris’s work have remained consistent throughout. Whether in his pedal car My First War Pony\, the Star Wars-inspired When the Sith Hits the Fan\, a Roy Lichtenstein inspired blonde woman with a familiar thought bubble that reads I’m Part Cherokee\, but Can’t Prove It\, or his Instant Ledger Art-o-Matic that projects View Master images on ledger paper\, Farris is equally concerned with “all things popular culture” as he is with American Indian art\, stereotypes\, and representing his cultural identity as a member of the Cherokee Nation and the Otoe-Missouria tribe. \nFarris’s work is deceptively easy to take in\, with its references to Superman\, Batman\, Star Wars\, View Masters\, slot machines\, and skateboards. On closer look\, however\, those pop culture references are filtered through Farris’s background in American Indian art and his personal and cultural identity. For example\, Cherokee syllabary\, developed to ensure the continuation of the Cherokee Nation’s language\, makes a frequent appearance in Farris’s artwork. In his graphic and boldly colored Indigenized Superman (who wears the typical Superman colors and costume)\, the figure’s short hair is now long and the “S” Superman logo\, now appears as the Cherokee character for “S.” Similarly\, his painting of the Batman logo is now emblazed with the Cherokee word for “Batman.” \nIn other works\, Farris references Ledger art\, so-called because the works were drawn on lined ledger paper. Ledger art was popular in the nineteenth century\, the time of mass removals\, allowing many Native people to document their history on their own terms. His view master work\, Instant Ledger Art-o-Matic\, includes a 1930s View Master projector which projects his artworks onto a small sheet of ledger paper\, thus creating “instant ledger art.” \nThat Lichtenstein inspired blonde with her thought bubble\, “I’m Part Cherokee\, but Can’t Prove It\,” appears\, on closer inspection\, on the pages of a bound book\, a first edition of the Dawes Rolls. The Dawes Act allowed the President to break up reservation lands for allotment of land parcels to the Five Civilized Tribes. The Rolls included both those approved for land allotment and those disapproved or rejected. The blonde woman references those individuals who were “Part Cherokee\,” but because they could not prove it\, were rejected from the rolls and thus from allotment. \nA recent work\, Culture Over Commodity\, addresses food sovereignty and the deleterious effects of introducing mass produced food\, some “in synthetic oils” to Native people. The slot machine turned sculpture asks players to spin the wheels in the hopes of winning the jackpot\, which requires the highly unlikely alignment of several brightly colored squares with such pre-contact foods as fish\, bison\, deer\, and the “three sisters\,” corn\, beans\, and squash. The much more likely “bust” promises “heart disease\,” “diabetes\,” or “obesity.” Hitting the jackpot in this instance results not in a monetary prize\, but in the promise of a return to “pre-contact” food sources\, like heirloom corn varieties\, which rest in the tray at the base of the slot machine. This tension between the popular and the deeply damaging history of Settler Colonialism are at the heart of Farris’s work\, as he takes on subjects around Tribal and food sovereignty\, resilience\, and survivance\, while also battling longstanding stereotypes and myths that continually undermine those efforts. Missing Link is a white satin sash that reads “Cherokee Princess 1878.” It might\, as the text suggests\, have been used by a Cherokee Princess in 1878. Trouble is\, there were no Cherokee princesses. Farris\, with a tinge of irony and humor so prevalent in his work\, turns the stereotype on its head. The joke\, it seems\, is on us. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 21\, for a Visiting Artist Workshop\, and Thursday\, October 22\, for a closing reception and remarks from the artist. \nImage Identifications:\nTom Farris\nCulture Over Commodity\nMixed media\n2026 \nTom Farris\nI’m Part Cherokee!\nMixed media\n2016 \nTom Farris\nMy First War Pony\nMixed media\n2017 \nVISIT THE GALLERY: Monday-Thursday\, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. \nThe Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery is on Anne Arundel Community College’s Arnold campus at 101 College Parkway.  Located on the main floor of the Cade building on West Campus\, the Cade Art Gallery features five exhibitions a year. SUMMARY:AND Creative Film Club (September) - "a Ghost Story" (2017 by David Lowery)
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at AND Gallery for a night filled with cinematic magic. Our film club is the perfect place for movie enthusiasts to gather\, watch\, and discuss films together. Whether you’re a casual movie-goer or a die-hard cinephile\, this event is for you! \nWHAT TO EXPECT\nCurated by our resident film nerds:. Think surrealist masterpieces\, haunting silent films with live musical accompaniment\, and underground treasures that challenge perspectives and expand minds. \nOf course\, no proper film night is complete without popcorn and sips to fuel the experience and discussions. \nSeptember Screening: A Ghost Story\nThis October\, join us at AND Gallery for a screening of A Ghost Story (2017) — a haunting\, meditative film about love\, loss\, and the passage of time\, playing out beneath a sheet-draped ghost who lingers in the house he once called home. \nAbout the film:\nWritten and directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints\, Pete’s Dragon)\, A Ghost Story stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara as a couple whose quiet suburban life is upended when he dies suddenly\, only to return to their home as a ghost — draped in the simplest costume imaginable\, a white sheet with two eyeholes cut out. Unstuck in time\, he’s forced to watch as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Far from a conventional horror tale\, this is a slow\, poetic meditation on grief\, memory\, and what — if anything — remains of us after we’re gone. \nWhy it fits the gallery:\nWe’re timing this screening to run alongside our Folklore & Folktales exhibit\, so you can wander the gallery and take in the show before (or after) settling into the film. Two ways to get your goosebumps in one night — myth and memory on the walls\, and a slow-burn ghost story on screen. \nWhat to expect: \n\nBrowse Folklore & Folktales in the gallery\nSettle in for a screening of A Ghost Story\nAs usual\, we’ll discuss the film afterward\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at AND Film Club! \nFriday\, September 25th\nDoors open at 6pm\nProgram rolls at 6:30pm \n…………………………………….. \nCome curious\, leave inspired.
