DESCRIPTION:The Founding Fathers’ cries for liberty from tyranny and oppression resonated with African Americans and were embraced by Black craftspeople\, both free and enslaved. This talk highlights the profound contributions of African American material culture in the enduring pursuit of freedom. It serves as the culmination of the DAR Museum’s 2025 exhibition and the accompanying catalogue\, “Fighting for Freedom: Black Craftspeople and the Pursuit of Independence.” \nIn his lecture\, Dr. Torren Gatson examines how the ideology of “making” fueled the success of African American craftspeople while simultaneously shaping and reframing the very foundations of American identity. \nThe Historic Annapolis Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. DESCRIPTION:Holes\nby Louis Sachar \n  \nStanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center\, Camp Green Lake\, where the warden makes the boys “build character” by spending all day\, every day\, digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center\, Camp Green Lake\, where the warden makes the boys “build character” by spending all day\, every day\, digging holes: five feet wide and five feet deep. It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. Join photographer Kaitlyn McQuaid for “First Exposure\,” a 4-week digital photography workshop covering the foundations of photography. This workshop will run for 2 hours each week\, and we’ll cover one element of photography in-depth\, including Aperture\, ISO\, Shutter Speed\, Lighting\, and Composition. We’ll practice with in-class\, hands-on exercises\, and tips for capturing moments on your own outside of class. \nNotes \n\n\nYou will receive an email 1 week before class starts with additional information. \n\n\n\nClass Requirements\n\n\n\n\nA digital DSLR camera is strongly recommended but if you only have a sophisticated point and shoot\, we are happy to have you as well. SUMMARY:DoArt Collage Coasters and Boxes
DESCRIPTION:Come to our next Muddy Creek Artists Guild DoART event led by artist Martha Mihaly Black and make a collage on either a small box or set of coasters. \nThe workshop is Sunday February 1\, 2026 from 1-330pm at the Davidsonville Family Recreation Center\, 3879 Queen Anne Bridge Rd.\, Davidsonville (in the white building on the right as you enter). Original date was January 25\, but we had to postpone due to weather. \nStudents will “harvest” one or more small collages from a larger collage to create an artistic top for the box or coasters. Then they will use acrylic paint to add color to their piece\, along with a coat of finish medium.\nNo prior art experience is necessary. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced maker\, you’re sure to tap into your creative energy with this activity. Come alone or sign up with a friend (or two!) for an art-full afternoon with Martha. \nCost is $35 per person. All supplies needed for the workshop are provided in the cost of your registration.
