DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

SUMMARY:Framing and Finishing: Woodworking in the Colonial Age
DESCRIPTION:Well before America declared its independence in 1776\, a building boom across the colonies meant that architects\, carpenters\, and artisans needed expertise\, materials\, and tools. Tools were specific to the role of carpenter\, joiner\, master\, journeyman\, apprentice\, and the unskilled labor force\, which would have included slave labor. \nThis exhibition represents more than 50 user-made and commercially produced house-building tools utilized by 18th-century woodworkers. Tools for framing a house\, along with those for finishing the interior–floors\, doors\, cornices\, windows\, shutters\, and chair rails-are represented. British and American wood planes\, measuring devices\, knives and saws\, braces\, and other implements are each a piece of art\, each used for a specific purpose. We acknowledge the skill and resourcefulness of these craftsmen and their part in building a new nation.

DESCRIPTION:A visceral comparison of two influential works of video art: Blutclip (1993) by Swiss visual artist Pipilotti Rist and Vital Statistics of a Citizen\, Simply Obtained (1977) by American conceptual artist Martha Rosler. \nThis exhibition invites you to compare these two works; to explore how each show the female body as transmogrified by society into a thing both abject and alien. Of equal importance\, we invite you to interrogate the different ways human beings are systematically controlled and dehumanized—not only women\, but also ‘foreigners’ and ‘citizens’. These works dare to ask how a person can feel both alien and native at the same time\, bound or unbound\, home or not-at-home. They challenge the societal forces that create this rending state of being. \nThematic questions we encourage you to consider while viewing these works include: Why do we otherize people? How can an objectified person reclaim feeling human? A virtual submission can be submitted here. \nThe Art Reception will be on Monday\, June 29\, from 6 pm – 7:30 pm. SUMMARY:Student Auditions Open for A Midsummer Night's Dream
DESCRIPTION:“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is Shakespeare at his most playfully chaotic. Four young lovers wander into the woods\, where a group of fairies—who really should not be in charge of anything—decide to intervene in their relationships. Thanks to one well-meaning but unreliable sprite\, everyone ends up briefly in love with the wrong person. Meanwhile\, a troupe of very sincere (and very untalented) actors attempts to stage a play. \nBy morning\, things are mostly sorted out\, dignity is lightly bruised\, and the whole experience feels a bit like a dream no one can quite explain. \nThis interactive\, fun\, outdoor production will be staged at Historic London Town & Gardens in Edgewater\, MD\, produced in partnership with Compass Rose Theater. Students ages 10-18 are encouraged to apply!

DESCRIPTION:38 years after starting his full-fledged music career with The Samples\, Sean Kelly continues to delight fans with music that transcends genres\, age\, and shatters the rules of the established music industry. Throughout his career\, Sean has been the driving influence of 20 albums and over 1 million records sold. \nSean started playing guitar at age 16 listening to Neil Young\, Rolling Stones and Jackson Browne. Those influences mixed with his own poignant and timeless lyrics\, a unique and striking voice and a mind for melodies led to songs like Little Silver Ring\, Feel Us Shaking and Wild River. For many fans\, these aren’t new songs or old songs\, but anthems to their lives that represent the first time they met their wife or the joys of their times at college. \nSean’s journeys across America have taken place in rental cars\, tour buses and pickup trucks that would have literally taken him to the moon and back over the last quarter of a century. There is a lot of music in store from Sean Kelly and The Samples.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop includes foundational musical theatre skills like voice\, movement\, stage direction\, and physical awareness\, along with acting and performance techniques. The curriculum aims to build confidence\, concentration\, imagination\, and creativity through a mix of theatre games\, production\, and group activities. \n  \nCore skills and techniques: \n\nVoice and movement: Exercises focus on breath support\, vocal projection\, and public speaking along with physical awareness in a performance based environment.\nImagination and concentration: Group exercises and games are used to build focus and concentration plus explore with the imagination.\nCharacter development: Techniques are taught for creating believable and authentic characters.\nCollaboration: Students will learn to work with one another to create a cast/team setting to achieve a common goal.\n\n  \nThis workshop concludes with a live performance on our main stage free for family & friends to attend. \n  \nAPPEARANCE: Students must dress appropriately for movement. Shoes should be either dance shoes or sneakers secured with laces or velcro. DESCRIPTION:Marylanders organized a rapid-response militia to defend liberty during the early days of the American Revolution. Known as the Maryland Flying Camp\, this force was more than a military unit; it was a civilian experience that transformed daily life in 1776. \nStop by Pinkney Street to meet living historians and experience how Marylanders lived\, worked\, and served during a pivotal moment in the fight for independence. The war was fought not only on battlefields\, but in homes\, shops\, taverns\, and fields! \nVisitors of all ages can take part in period games and a hands-on activity from the Revolutionary era. \nThis is a drop-in style program. Visitors may join at any time during program hours and explore at their own pace through informal interaction and demonstrations. Advance registration recommended\, but not required.

DESCRIPTION:Water\, Water on the Wall at The Galleries at Quiet Waters with Artists Annette Uroskie and Joan Machinchick\nBoth the Willow and the Garden galleries will hold the watercolor works of Annette Uroskie and Joan Machinchick from May 27 to July 27\, 2026; their exhibit is titled “Water\, Water on the Wall.  Annette and Joan have enjoyed a long friendship\, met through sailing but drawn together through a love of art.  They share a mutual awe of the majesty of life-giving water which coaxes the garden into bloom\, and enlivens the paint into art.  They portray its surface\, its depths\, its moods\, its life within and the line where it meets the land and earth comes alive. \nThe Opening Reception will be held on May 31 from 1:30 to 3:30.  The Visitor Center\, home to the Galleries\,  is open from 9 – 4 on weekdays and 10 – 4 on weekends.  Entrance to the park is $6. per vehicle; fee is waived for the Reception only.

DESCRIPTION:In 1975\, Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park\, and it featured a huge gorilla standing front and center. The band\, David Jenkins (guitars\, vocals)\, Cory Lerios(keyboards\, vocals)\, Bud Cockerel (bass\, vocals)\, and Steve Price (drums\, percussion) were nowhere in sight. At that point\, there was a bit of a mystique surrounding Pablo Cruise\, and when asked what Pablo Cruise meant\, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this: “Pablo” represents an honest\, real\, down-to-earth individual\, and “Cruise” depicts his fun-loving\, easy-going attitude towards life. In essence\, that’s what Pablo Cruise music is all about. Honest\, real down-to-earth vocals\, accompanied by fun yet elegant\, infectious grooves. To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing\, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event!

The evening culminates with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47—one of the most gripping works of the 20th century—and Reynaldo Moya’s Polo Romanesco\, a vibrant postmodern send-up of centuries-old harmonic tradition. \n“This concert represents everything we aspire to as an orchestra\,” said ASO Executive Director Erica Bondarev Rapach. “For the musicians to step onto the Meyerhoff stage for the first time—alongside our Academy students—and share this extraordinary program with colleagues from orchestras across the country is a moment we will never forget.” \nThe Music: From First Notes to Triumph\nNancy Galbraith — Midnight Stirring\nThe evening opens with Nancy Galbraith’s Midnight Stirring\, performed side-by-side by the Orion Youth Orchestra and their ASO musician-mentors. Beginning with a solo violin melody over low\, slightly ominous chords\, the work unfolds into a lively ostinato with richly harmonized melodic lines—full of rhythmic energy and texture. Originally commissioned for the 2015 National Flute Convention in Washington\, D.C.\, it was rescored by the composer for orchestra\, and it makes for a striking and meaningful collaboration between young artists and professionals sharing the same stage. \nBenjamin Britten — Soírées musicales\, Op. 9\nThe Orion Youth Orchestra and ASO musicians perform Britten’s Soírées musicales\, a five-movement suite composed by the 22-year-old Britten\, drawing on themes from Rossini’s collection of the same name. The orchestra will perform movements 1\, 3\, and 5. Charming\, dance-like\, and sharpened with inventive orchestration\, it showcases a young composer’s technical command and irresistible wit—an ideal work for young musicians to inhabit and own. \nReinaldo Moya — Polo Romanesco\nMoya’s Polo Romanesco is a postmodern\, playful\, and deeply felt exploration of the Romanesca—a harmonic formula dating to the 16th century that traveled from Europe across the Atlantic and became the foundation for the beloved Venezuelan folk song\, the Polo Margriteño. Moya’s piece weaves old and new\, European and Venezuelan\, classical and popular into something entirely its own. It is a bridge built from music across unthinkable distances and centuries.\nDmitri Shostakovich — Symphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47\nWritten under intense political pressure in 1937\, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony remains one of the most electrifying and contested works in the symphonic canon. Was it a sincere act of defiance\, or a calculated concession to Soviet authority? Scholars and audiences have debated the composition for nearly a century\, while audiences have adored the piece for its unforgettable intensity. From a hauntingly somber opening to a finale of overwhelming force\, the symphony demands everything from the orchestra and gives everything in return. \n“Shostakovich’s Fifth is a work of immense complexity and raw power\,” said Maestro Novo. “It speaks to resilience\, to survival\, to the endurance of the human spirit under impossible pressure. To perform it on this stage\, at this moment\, feels right.” \nThe Annapolis Symphony Academy Orion Youth Orchestra\nThe Orion Youth Orchestra\, conducted by ASA Assistant Conductor Claire Lewis\, opens the concert performing Midnight Stirring and Soírées musicales side-by-side with ASO musicians—a mentor-student collaboration that is among the most distinctive and moving aspects of the ASO’s mission. DESCRIPTION:Have a digital camera you don’t know how to use? Want to brush up on your photography skills? Join photographer Kaitlyn McQuaid for “First Exposure\,” a 4-week digital photography workshop covering the foundations of photography. This workshop will run for 2 hours each week and we’ll cover one element of photography in-depth including Aperture\, ISO\, Shutter Speed\, Lighting\, and Composition. We’ll practice with in-class\, hands-on exercises\, and tips for capturing moments on your own outside of class. \n  \n\n\nNotes\n\nYou will receive an email 1 week before class starts with additional information. \n\n\n\nClass Requirements\n\n\n\n\nA digital DSLR camera is strongly recommended but if you only have a sophisticated point and shoot\, we are happy to have you as well. Just be mindful that some of the point and shoots do not always let you adjust as many settings. With this in mind\, please check in with us if you have something different so our Instructor can see what kind of digital camera you have before the workshop starts.
