DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

This musical revue\, featuring live piano accompaniment\, will showcase some of the theater’s most memorable songs since its founding in 2011. \nOpening night\, April 10\, will include a special Cabaret & Soirée Fundraiser honoring founder Lucinda Merry-Browne. Guests will enjoy drinks and dessert while mingling with the professional cast. \n“Our founder\, Lucinda Merry-Browne\, had a bold vision to bring a professional teaching theater to the Annapolis area\, and we’ve been gaining momentum for 15 years. In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll learn how to create your own striking blue-and-white images using the 19th-century technique of cyanotype. Participants will prepare light-sensitive paper or fabric\, arrange objects\, plants\, or transparencies on the surface\, and harness the power of the sun (or UV light) to develop their prints.\nNo prior experience is needed—this is a playful and experimental process that welcomes all skill levels. SUMMARY:Wildlife Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 4/19 8:30am-4pm. Room: 307 & outdoor location. Price: $116.43 (WS26LB1) \nThis photo workshop\, set in a location selected for spring wildlife activity\, will provide students with field experience in photographing the magnificent creatures that inhabit our area in the early spring. Students will gather at Md Hall for an 8:30 a.m. overview of techniques and settings to utilize in the field. Students will drive to the selected location (within 15-20 minutes of Md Hall) and set up for mentored shooting of waterfowl\, including (but hopefully not limited to) osprey\, ducks\, heron\, egrets\, cormorants\, and gulls. Students will be individually assisted in shooting techniques\, camera settings\, composition\, and using the light to create beautiful wildlife photographs. The actual location will be selected shortly before the workshop date\, based upon maximum activity and subject matter opportunities. Pack a lunch and picnic as you shoot. The day will conclude back at Md. Hall for image review and critique with discussion of optimal editing techniques to be applied. Students will be provided with a packing list of preferred gear prior to the workshop. Modest walking on unpaved surfaces may be involved depending on the location selecton.\nCLASS PREREQUISITES.\n1. Students must have a working knowledge of their DSLR/ mirrorless camera (no cell phone cameras will be used). They must know how and where to adjust settings in manual\, shutter\, and aperture modes for: shutter speed\, aperture\, ISO\, shooting mode\, drive mode and focal area and must understand the interplay of shutter speed\, ISO\, and aperture.\n2. Students must bring a tripod or monopod with any required camera-mount (such as separate foot to allow mounting the camera on the device)\,\n3. Students must be able to drive (or work with other participants to share a ride) from Md. Hall to the shooting location.\n4. Students must be able to walk over unpaved surfaces carrying their gear\, potentially through woodlands\, for short distances. A photo backpack is recommended for carrying gear. DESCRIPTION:Creating a New World Vision From Ancient Design Considered by many to be a “sacred magical art”\, the creation of a talisman with specific intentions written into the life-giving egg\, the Pysanky is an ancient means to celebrate the cycles and events in nature and in life. \nCreated using motifs rooted in nature and the cycles of life\, designs are made with simple instruments (made of wood and copper) called kistkas\, the humble materials of beeswax and candlelight\, and intensely vibrant dyes. Create a beautiful egg in the time-honored Ukrainian tradition of Pysanky\, or create a symbolic piece of art to invoke a new world vision. \nThis workshop will explore the art in a free form\, using symbolism that tells a specific story and holds a deliberate intention.
