SUMMARY:AND Creative Film Club (June) - El Topo (1970)
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at AND Creative Studio for a night filled with cinematic magic. Our film club is the perfect place for movie enthusiasts to gather\, watch\, and discuss films together. Whether you’re a casual movie-goer or a die-hard cinephile\, this event is for you!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Expect\nCurated by our resident film nerds: Each month brings a carefully selected gem from the world of cinema’s hidden corners. Think surrealist masterpieces\, haunting silent films with live musical accompaniment\, and underground treasures that challenge perspectives and expand minds. \nThe evening unfolds as more than just a screening. Arrive early for pre-film discussions where our curators share insights and context. After the credits roll\, dive deeper into post-screening conversations that explore themes\, techniques\, and the lasting impact of these remarkable works. \nOf course\, no proper film night is complete without snacks and sips to fuel the experience and discussions. \nJune Screening: El Topo\, (1970) directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky\nConsidered to be the beginning of the “Midnight Movie\,” Alejandro Jodorowsky’s mind-bending odyssey\, El Topo (1970) is part spaghetti western and part spiritual acid trip. \nThe film follows El Topo\, a violent gunslinger\, who rides a mystical desert on horseback with his young\, naked son\, Hijo. After stumbling upon a ravaged village\, he avenges the slaughter and claims the gang leader’s mistress\, Mara\, for himself. Mara refuses to love El Topo unless he proves himself the greatest gunfighter. To accomplish this\, he abandons Hijo to a group of monks and embarks on a violent\, spiritual journey across the desert to confront four legendary “gun masters.” \nFull of haunting\, bizarre\, and beautiful imagery. Jodorowsky was a part of the Panic Movement\, a chaotic response to surrealism’s mainstream acceptance in the 1960s. This movement aimed to shock audiences and disrupt societal norms. Combine that with Jodorowsky’s personal mysticism\, and you get El Topo. A film that rejects normal/linear storytelling in favor of the subconscious\, the irrational\, and the symbolic. El Topo is a hallucinatory experience\, a bizarre\, dreamlike meditation on ego\, religion\, and the futility of violence. Ironically\, despite all of that\, El Topo marks the beginning of Jodorowsky’s impact on the cultural mainstream\, which can be seen to this day\, in the existence of the Midnight Movie to his famously unmade adaptation of Dune that influenced and created the visual identity of sci-fi cornerstones like Star Wars\, the Alien franchise\, and The Fifth Element. \nAs usual\, we will be discussing the film and the music afterward with drinks and nibbles. \nWe look forward to seeing you at AND Film Club! \nDoors open at 6 pm / Program rolls at 6:30 pm \n…………………………………….. \nCome curious\, leave inspired. \n\n\n\n\n

\nJuly Screening: The Golem: How He Came into the World (Der Golem) 1920\nIn medieval Prague\, Rabbi Loew has read the stars and foreseen calamity for his community at the hands of the Emperor\, and sets about creating a supernatural being\, a Golem\, for their protection. All seems well until a realignment of the stars permits the demon Astaroth to possess the Golem\, and it runs amok. \nJoin us for Paul Wegener’s masterpiece of early German Expressionist film with live score by Adrian Bond and atmospheric projections by Joseph Karr. \nAs usual\, we will be discussing the film and the music afterward with drinks and nibbles. \nWe look forward to seeing you at AND Film Club! \nDoors open at 6 pm / Program rolls at 6:30 \n…………………………………….. \nCome curious\, leave inspired.

SUMMARY:MIGHTY MARY a film screening by the Annapolis Film Society
DESCRIPTION:The Annapolis Film Society presents\n\n\n\n\n\nA Paramount Republic Films screening of the new film\nMIGHTY MARY\non \nTuesday\, August 18\, 2026\nDoors open at 6:30 PM | Film at 7 PM\n\nThe film is followed by a Q&A with special guests hosted by Gary Jobson\n\nSynopsis\n\nNarrated by Elizabeth Banks and Hugh Jackman\, directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker (and Olympian) Mary Mazzio\, and produced by Mazzio along with Allison Abner (writer for Narcos\, West Wing\, and Imperfect Women) and Atlanta Hawks owner and NBA All-Star Grant Hill\, in partnership with Skydance Sports and Paramount’s Republic Pictures\, Mighty Mary chronicles an amazing group of “we eat nails for breakfast” type of women: the first all-women’s sailing team to contend for the famed America’s Cup\, the holy grail for one of sport’s most elite and exclusive racing events. This team was groundbreaking\, beginning with an advertisement in the New York Times (prompting hilarious responses from a wide swath of Americana who thought they might have what it takes to sail in the America’s Cup\, including a woman flexing in a bikini next to a cactus). From there\, a group of world-class and Olympic sailors as well as Olympic rowers came together\, a team that included a deaf sailor\, a Native American sailor\, and the first African-American sailor to ever win an America’s Cup race (as a coach of this novice\, erstwhile team). What was dismissed as a publicity stunt turned into something unimaginable. This motley crew (sailing aboard Mighty Mary) stunningly eliminated Stars and Stripes from contention\, helmed by 4-time America’s Cup winner Dennis Conner (“Mr. America’s Cup”). However\, a secret backroom deal the night before the race upended that result.\n\n\nScreening in the MAIN AUDITORIUM at MARYLAND HALL\nLimited tickets. Seating in general admission.\n\n$20 per ticket\npurchase online at\n\nTICKET LINK\nhttps://annapolisfilmsociety.eventive.org/schedule/6a3ea342b941e04375fcc1f6\n\nCASH ONLY rush line at the door $20\, but does not guarantee a seat — pre-buy tickets online to assure a seat.
