SUMMARY:Mirrored Play
DESCRIPTION:Mirrored Play is an original work created by artist Dawn Whitmore with composer Ashi Day and performed by opera singers\, Rachel Sitomer and Mairin Srygley. In this piece\, the two sopranos face opposite directions and sing to each other through mirrors positioned on sculptural ladders within an outdoor amphitheater. \nThis project is inspired by and dedicated to the wildlife that inhabits Crofton Park: the foxes\, barred owls\, mourning doves\, squirrels\, dragonflies\, painted turtles\, sunfish\, beavers\, geese\, raccoons\, lighting bugs\, and the little blue heron. \nThis performance is twelve minutes in duration and freely open to the general public. Appropriate for all ages. \nSaturday September 19\, 2026 7pm \nThis project has been generously funded in part by the Maryland State Arts

SUMMARY:Elements in Time Exhibition and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Jo Fleming Contemporary Art is delighted to present “Elements in Time\,” a new exhibition of mixed-media abstract paintings by Maryland-based artist Sally Rhudy. \nDrawing inspiration from ancient civilizations\, lost knowledge and the enduring language of symbols\, Rhudy’s richly layered works explore the relationship between humanity\, time and the natural elements. Ancient glyphs\, marks and fragments emerge and disappear beneath successive layers\, creating paintings that feel at once archaeological yet are bold\, colorful and contemporary. \nAlso on show will be a selection Rachel Waldron works that combine family photographs\, drawing\, painting and printmaking to explore the threads that connect generations. \nExhibition Dates: September 2-30\, 2026 \nArtist Reception: September 12\, 5:30–7:30 (talk at 6pm)

After the credits roll\, dive deeper into post-screening conversations that explore themes\, techniques\, and the lasting impact of these remarkable works. \nOf course\, no proper film night is complete without snacks and sips to fuel the experience and discussions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Film\nWriter/Director Kim Merced Garland Film Retrospective\n(with In-Person Q&A via Zoom!)\nA Note From the Curator Peri Lewnes: \nIt is my great pleasure to introduce you to one of my favorite independent filmmakers: Kim Merced Garland. \nI met Kim in 2012 at the Flyway Film Festival in Pepin\, Wisconsin\, where she won Best Narrative Short Film for “VIVIENNE AGAIN.” \n“VIVIENNE AGAIN” is the first film in her “Resurrection Trilogy\,” which we will be screening at AND Film Club on Friday\, August 28th! \nThe Resurrection Trilogy\, which includes “DEAL TRAVIS IN” and “THE END OF MARA\,” will screen with her highly praised horror short “BODY IMAGE”. \nKim went on to write for SYFY’s groundbreaking horror series CHUCKY and Netflix’s Top 10 sci-fi/fantasy show THE IMPERFECTS. She was selected as a fellow for the prestigious The Black List x Women in Film Episodic Lab in 2019 and as a rising director in the 2024 Women in Film Directing Fellowship. \nOriginally from New York City\, of Puerto Rican descent\, Kim grew up above her family’s Hell’s Kitchen funeral home (picture SIX FEET UNDER in DAREDEVIL’s Neighborhood). DESCRIPTION:The Annapolis Film Society presents\n\n\n\n\n\nA Paramount Republic Films screening of the new film\nMIGHTY MARY\non \nTuesday\, August 18\, 2026\nDoors open at 6:30 PM | Film at 7 PM\n\nThe film is followed by a Q&A with special guests hosted by Gary Jobson\n\nSynopsis\n\nNarrated by Elizabeth Banks and Hugh Jackman\, directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker (and Olympian) Mary Mazzio\, and produced by Mazzio along with Allison Abner (writer for Narcos\, West Wing\, and Imperfect Women) and Atlanta Hawks owner and NBA All-Star Grant Hill\, in partnership with Skydance Sports and Paramount’s Republic Pictures\, Mighty Mary chronicles an amazing group of “we eat nails for breakfast” type of women: the first all-women’s sailing team to contend for the famed America’s Cup\, the holy grail for one of sport’s most elite and exclusive racing events. This team was groundbreaking\, beginning with an advertisement in the New York Times (prompting hilarious responses from a wide swath of Americana who thought they might have what it takes to sail in the America’s Cup\, including a woman flexing in a bikini next to a cactus). From there\, a group of world-class and Olympic sailors as well as Olympic rowers came together\, a team that included a deaf sailor\, a Native American sailor\, and the first African-American sailor to ever win an America’s Cup race (as a coach of this novice\, erstwhile team). What was dismissed as a publicity stunt turned into something unimaginable. This motley crew (sailing aboard Mighty Mary) stunningly eliminated Stars and Stripes from contention\, helmed by 4-time America’s Cup winner Dennis Conner (“Mr. America’s Cup”). However\, a secret backroom deal the night before the race upended that result.\n\n\nScreening in the MAIN AUDITORIUM at MARYLAND HALL\nLimited tickets.
