SUMMARY:Elements in Time Exhibition and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Jo Fleming Contemporary Art is delighted to present “Elements in Time\,” a new exhibition of mixed-media abstract paintings by Maryland-based artist Sally Rhudy. \nDrawing inspiration from ancient civilizations\, lost knowledge and the enduring language of symbols\, Rhudy’s richly layered works explore the relationship between humanity\, time and the natural elements. Ancient glyphs\, marks and fragments emerge and disappear beneath successive layers\, creating paintings that feel at once archaeological yet are bold\, colorful and contemporary. \nAlso on show will be a selection Rachel Waldron works that combine family photographs\, drawing\, painting and printmaking to explore the threads that connect generations. \nExhibition Dates: September 2-30\, 2026 \nArtist Reception: September 12\, 5:30–7:30 (talk at 6pm)

SUMMARY:Reception - Miguel Braceli: UNBURIAL
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we ponder the meaning of the Annapolis Liberty Tree\, which was felled in 1999 after lording over St. John’s College’s front lawn for more than three centuries. A witness tree\, it was the site of meetings of the Sons of Liberty prior to the revolution. More recently\, it was the backdrop for scores of graduations.   \nToday\, amid the 250th anniversary of the United States\, what should we make of the tree’s absence? Is this a time to reconsider our notions of liberty? These questions are central to Braceli’s project\, though the question he has chosen to pose is more poetic and enigmatic: “Can you whisper to me\, the last breath of a tree?” \nThis project takes the form of a temporary outdoor sculpture on the college’s front lawn\, and a related installation in the main gallery. This fall\, stay tuned for a series of community-driven “whisper conversations” inside the installation. \nThank you to the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area and the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority for their generous support of this project.  \nPARKING\nParking is free for this event in the campus parking lots off of St. John’s Street.

SUMMARY:Reception - Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis
DESCRIPTION:What is the difference between being looked at versus being witnessed? Between being invasively surveilled versus deeply seen? Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis—with Rest Energy (1980) and Monitor (1999)\, respectively—explore what it costs us to trust each other and how important it is that we do. As we watch these two videos unfold\, we are invited to sit with how much social cynicism deteriorates us\, if we allow it to take over and transform our will to trust into one to control. As an antidote to this\, each artist seems to posit that we must instead relinquish control if we hope to be loved. Love\, then\, becomes indistinguishable from the act of choosing not to monitor someone fearfully\, but to witness them vulnerably. It is a terrifying and brave\, humbling\, and life-giving choice. We hope watching these works of art helps it become easier to make. \nFunding for this project was provided by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt\, and the Arts Council for Anne Arundel County.
