SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival -Muneer Nasser Band - Jazz Genius: Coltrane\, Miles & Weston
DESCRIPTION:Steeped in the jazz tradition\, trumpeter and bandleader Muneer Nasser was exposed to great music under the  influence of his father\, jazz bassist Jamil Nasser. The Annapolis Jazz & Roots Opening Night concert pays homage to three legendary musicians born in 1926 whose artistry inspired and profoundly influenced Muneer Nasser’s musical development. Moreover\, their brave explorations led to seismic shifts in our sonic landscape and continue to resonate around the globe. \nAmong the tunes to be heard are John Coltrane’s “All Morning Long\,” a down-home blues composed by Red Garland in 1957. The original recording featured Muneer’s father (then known as George Joyner)\, along with Garland\, Coltrane\, Donald Byrd and Art Taylor. The immensely popular 1957 post-bop tune “Giant Steps” represents Coltrane’s departure from drug addiction toward a cleaner\, more productive life. \nA sampling of Miles Davis compositions has to include “All Blues.”  Composed in 1959\, the blues tune is the lead track on one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. Composed in 1963\,  the up-tempo swing tune “Seven Steps to Heaven” is the title track of a 1963 album that introduced Memphis saxophonist George Coleman as a new player in the Miles Davis group. \nPianist Randy Weston was surely an ethnomusicologist before the term was ever used. His music was shaped by a quest to explore his African ancestry and he incorporated elements of African music into his jazz compositions. Enjoy hearing Weston’s 1958 jazz waltz\, “Hi Fly.” (Jamil Nasser appeared on the first recorded version of the tune made at the Newport Jazz Festival.) Hear also the 1961 Weston ballad “Cry Me Not\,” paying  tribute to Billie Holiday. \nThe band will also perform Muneer Nasser composition “A Soldier’s Story.”  The title track of his 2019 debut album\, the modal march pays tribute to his father. (It is a companion to Muneer’s book\, Upright Bass: The Musical Life and Legacy of Jamil Nasser.) Listeners will also be treated to “Nasser’s Blues\,” a Memphis style blues with a contemporary twist. The band’s second album\, Blue House Session\, was released in 2024. Both appear on the Vertical Visions Media label. \nThe Muneer Nasser Band features: Muneer Nasser – Trumpet/Flugelhorn\nElijah Easton – Tenor Saxophone\nJames King – Bass \nJohn Lamkin III – Drums\nDarius Scott – Piano \nThe band has performed at the D.C. Jazz Festival\,  Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and Silver Spring Jazz Festival as well as Blues Alley\, Westminster Jazz and Takoma Station in the DMV. In New York\, they’ve appeared at Smalls Jazz and The National Jazz Museum of Harlem. \nhttps://muneernassermusic.com/music

DESCRIPTION:Luke Soneral An Overture: The Mouse and its Shadow\nReinaldo Moya Vestido de Mar\, with violinist Francesca Anderegg\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky The Tempest\, Op. 18\nIgor Stravinsky Divertimento from Le baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) \nThis concert is approximately 2 hours in length\, with a 20 minute intermission. \nIn Forces of Nature\, the natural world becomes a source of wonder\, reflection\, and transformation. Emerging composer Luke Soneral opens the program with An Overture: The Mouse and Its Shadow\, offering an exciting glimpse of orchestral music’s future. Reinaldo Moya’s ocean-inspired violin concerto\, Vestido de Mar\, brings violinist Francesca Anderegg to the stage for a work that reflects the landscapes and experiences of the Americas. SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Perkutao Afro Peruvian Jazz
DESCRIPTION:THE BAND \nAfro Peruvian jazz group Perkutao was founded in Lima\, Peru in 2005 by percussionist\, dancer and educator Percy Chinchilla. The group recently relocated to the U.S.\, giving new audiences an opportunity to experience the magic of their unique sound. Rooted in Afro-Peruvian traditions\, their music also incorporates Afro-Cuban influences and various contemporary styles. The result is intriguing and compelling. \nPercy Chinchilla grew up in the legendary Callejón del Buque\, where the Afro-Peruvian cajón could be heard daily alongside guitars\, singers\, and other percussion instruments. At a young age\, he won percussion and dance awards and was asked to tour Latin America with top Peruvian artists. He dreamt of someday launching his own ensemble to express his culture in a modern and sophisticated way\, on par with other African Diasporic traditions. \nAfter studying global percussion traditions for over 20 years\, the group’s drummer\, Robin Axel\, was drawn to the same vibrant music which embraces both innovation and tradition. Today Chinchilla and Axel work together to bring this music across the globe. They are joined by other stellar players: Peruvian Paolo Valdivia on guitar\, Gabriel Vivas (from Venezuela) on bass and Baltimore trumpeter Leo Maxey. Their enticing music and intriguing stories will likely be new to the ears of most listeners. \nTHE PROGRAM \nPerkutao has performed numerous times at the National Theater of Peru. In 2022\, Perkutao joined legendary Cuban group Los Munequitos de Matanzas to celebrate the group’s 70th anniversary in Matanzas\, Cuba. In the Washington\, D.C. area\, they’ve appeared at Blues Alley\, Takoma Station and Mr. Henry’s. Their debut album\, Mis Ancestros\, was produced by acclaimed percussionist Manongo Mujica. \nTheir festival performances at Peerless Rens Club will be intriguing. “Mayoral” by Wilfredo Franco Laguna is a Festejo\, the most emblematic and popular style of Afro-Peruvian dance music. Made famous by singer Lucila Campos\, the song is about the resistance of Afro Peruvians during the period of slavery in Peru. It opens with a chorus representing an intense call against a slave master and features a duet between the cajon and drum set. \nComposed by Cairo Soto\, “Toro Mata” has been recorded by Peruvian musicians\, the great Celia Cruz and other salsa performers. It is originally a lando\, a traditionally slow\, syncopated genre in 6-8 time. It features the cajon\, quijada de burro (donkey jawbone)\, and the checo (a gourd drum). The song mocks the Spanish and Europeans who dominated Peruvian society in colonial and post-colonial Peru. The dance parodies the European waltz; the lyrics symbolically portray Spain as a bull who will face an unhappy ending. \nComposed by Perkutao drummer Robin Axel in the Zamacueca style\, “Callejon Nocturno” is reminiscent of the alleys in Lima\, where Afro Peruvian culture took root and Perkutao was created. The song features solos by all group members and combines modern jazz harmonies and melodies with Peruvian rhythms.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - David & Ginger Hildebrand Music for Lafayette 1770s -1820s
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday afternoon\, David & Ginger Hildebrand will deliver a fascinating program performing music written for and about Lafayette. Composed from the 1770s – 1820s\, the tunes illustrate his enormous popularity in the New World. When Lafayette came from France to America during the Revolutionary war\, his given title was Marquis. Once made a general in the Continental army\, he renounced his noble title\, took on the title General Lafayette and became a beloved figure in American history. \nCopious evidence of his 1824-25 tour survives in prints and paintings\, commemorative items\, poetry and pamphlets as well as published descriptions of speeches\, toasts\, parades\, fireworks and triumphal arches. Yet the performing arts\, most notably music and dance\, survive to rekindle the past excitement and mood of that day – that America is great because of its awesome democratic institutions and larger-than-life heroes: Lafayette and Washington. Period songs\, dance tunes and marches resonate with such affirmation down the centuries. \nArranged from period sources\, some songs involve newly composed music and lyrics; others are parodies – new lyrics set to old familiar tunes. “Yankee Doodle” and “Auld Lang Syne” were common melodic choices. You’ll hear how the latter tune was used to honor Lafayette’s presence during the Revolutionary battle at Brandywine\, Pennsylvania. As the artists sample later decades of music\, listeners will come to appreciate how American music of the 1820s served to express many of the thoughts and hopes of Americans long ago. The stimulating program will be a treat to the eyes as well as the ears. It is rendered on a delightful array of period instruments such as harpsichord\, Baroque and English guitars\, English flute\, violin and hammered dulcimer. Sit back\, listen\, learn and enjoy!

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Maryland Hall Presents- Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:Drummer\, composer and producer\, “beat scientist” Makaya McCraven reshapes jazz by bringing improvisation together with hip-hop production and musical traditions from around the world.\n“Makaya McCraven is a prolific drummer\, composer and producer. An artist who has been aptly called a “cultural synthesizer\,” McCraven has a unique gift for collapsing space\, destroying borders and blending past\, present\, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre\, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice\, Rolling Stone\, The Guardian\, and NPR\, among other publications\, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of progressive music. According to the New York Times\, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.”\nBorn in Paris in the Autumn of 1983 to Hungarian singer and flutist Ágnes Zsigmondi and African- American expat jazz drummer Stephen McCraven\, Makaya was raised in a vibrant\, creative community in the Northampton\, Massachusetts area\, where his father often played with artists like saxophonist and ethnomusicologist Marion Brown\, multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef\, and saxophonist Archie Shepp. That scene\, with its enticing blend of cultures\, helped establish his philosophy around jazz as folk music. Meanwhile\, his mother’s music blended Eastern European folk traditions\, concurrently shaping his conceptions about the role of music in building and reflecting communities”[excerpted from https://www.intlanthem.com/artists/makaya-mccraven]\nExperience one of contemporary music’s most inventive artists live on Maryland Hall’s Main Stage.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - USNA Band's Superintendent's Combo - Birth of the Cool: A Miles Davis Tribute
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Naval Academy Band’s Superintendent’s Combo presents a performance highlighting music from the iconic 1957 jazz album Birth of the Cool. The concert celebrates 2026 as the 250th year of the United States of America and the 100th anniversary of the birthday of one of the most important and influential American musicians in the world\, Miles Davis (1926-1991). \nThe ethereal\, and at times mysterious\, Birth of the Cool arrangements showed Davis in compelling and creative collaboration with arrangers Gerry Mulligan\, Gil Evans\, John Lewis and Johnny Carisi. One hundred years after Davis’s birth\, these modern USNA musicians keep that creative spirit alive. Listeners will hear an arrangement of “Nardis” by SF Jazz Collective\, original arrangements of “Blue in Green” and “Dr. Jackle\,” and much more. The USNA Band has performed simlar celebratory programs this year at leading DMV jazz venues and promises to entertain and satisfy both seasoned jazz fans and adventurous new listeners. \nUSNA musicians have included Latin Grammy winners and high-charting recording artists. Members have studied at prominent music schools and conservatories nationwide and have extensive experience as performers and educators. The band was formed in November of 1852 by order of the Secretary of the Navy. Its primary mission is to provide musical support to the Superintendent\, Commandant\, and Brigade of Midshipmen. These dedicated professionals are known across the nation as “The Navy’s Oldest and Finest Band!” \nThe band has appeared at Baltimore’s Keystone Korner\, The Pullo Center in York\, PA\, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage\, the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Jazz Festival\, the Frederick Festival of the Arts and for numerous concert series in the Mid-Atlantic region. \nBand Members for this program include: \nMU1 Eric Vazquez: Tenor Sax \nMU1 Aaron Stone: Trumpet \nMUCS Colin Renick: Baritone/Alto Sax \nMU1 Tyler Tolles: Vibes/ Auxiliary Percussion \nMU1 Konrad Malinowski: Guitar \nMU1 Will Camps: Bass \nMUCS Brandon May: Piano \nMU1 William Tillman: Drums \nThis is a FREE admission show\, but advance reservations are strongly recommended. The evening includes an award presentation\, concert and reception.

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Akua Allrich: Tribute to Miriam Makeba & Nina Simone
DESCRIPTION:Jazz vocalist Akua Allrich is a musician of extraordinary talent and crowd-moving passion. The charismatic vocalist\, composer\, and teacher has etched out a place for her unique musical expression\, electrifying audiences in and around the nation’s capital and far beyond\, through live performances and four major recordings. \nHer 2010 independent release\, A Peace of Mine\, created significant buzz with critics and music lovers\, earned international attention and won distribution through a Japanese record label one year later. Uniquely Standard: Akua Allrich Live! was released in 2012\, followed by Soul Singer in 2015. In March of 2026 she released Bonya. The live recording is a deeply personal tribute to her father’s legacy and reflects her Pan- African approach to musical expression. \nAllrich’s style is rooted in blues\, soul\, and rhythm and blues and jazz. With an open ear to the world’s music\, she sings in Portuguese\, French\, Spanish\, English\, Twi and Xhosa. She has been likened to legendary artists who were important civil rights activists: South Africa’s Miriam Makeba (1932-2008) and America’s Nina Simone (1933-2003).  In her Annapolis Jazz & Roots performance on November 14\, she’ll pay tribute to both while sharing her own acclaimed compositions. \nThe venue\, Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum\, could hardly be more appropriate. Audiences are invited to arrive early to take in the current art exhibition. She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. \nThis has been an amazing year for Akua Allrich. In addition to releasing her album Bonya\, she has partnered with acclaimed trumpeter and educator Dominick Farinacci as a featured vocalist for his multimedia production\, Behind the Lines: A 9/11 Story. The performance weaves jazz\, soul\, and narrative storytelling together to explore themes of resilience and memory. Dates for that project are interspersed with album release appearances featuring her signature band\, Akua Allrich & the Tribe. Those dates most often include internationally respected bassist Kris Funn. Her frequent and long-term collaborator\, Funn provides deep blues flavor and foundational grooves to the new album. \nAkua Allrich was educated at Howard University\, where she earned a bachelor of music in jazz vocals and a master’s degree in social work. She was mentored and coached by prominent jazz figures\, including her godmother Kehembe V. Eichelberger\, pianist Charles Covington\, and singer/drummer Grady Tate. Her father\, Agyei Akoto\, was a founding member of the spiritual jazz ensemble Nation. The family home held a wealth of cherished recordings that she and her siblings were invited to explore. (She did not buy any albums until her second year in college because her parents had such an amazing collection of jazz records!). One of the first jazz albums she bought was John Coltrane’s Live at the Village Vanguard: The Master Takes. It is serendipitous that Annapolis Jazz & Roots pays tribute to Coltrane on Opening Night! \nA mature\, respected yet ever evolving artist\, Akua Allrich has inspired music lovers from all walks of life. She has learned to see music as a tool for healing\, truth\, and empowerment Audiences have come to expect nothing short of brilliant artistry from her. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear her in Annapolis!

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Uhwachi-Reh Indigenous Arts
DESCRIPTION:Uhwachi-Reh is a Baltimore-based Native American dance and cultural arts troupe led by Louis Campbell. The troupe’s name\, Uhwachi-Reh\, is a Tuscarora word that means “Extended Family.” The group connects to the history of Native Americans—mostly from North Carolina’s Lumbee and Haliwa-Saponi tribes—who moved to Baltimore after the Great Depression to work in local factories. \nMembers from those and other tribes dance at numerous Pow Wow gatherings and share Native American history\, traditional songs and dances at museums\, festivals\, and community events. Baltimore resident and group leader Louis Campbell is Lumbee. He creates ceremonial regalia and views traditional dancing as a form of “prayer in motion.” The troupe performs traditional war dances and social dances in full ceremonial regalia\, accompanied by live drumming and singing. The performers for festival will include Denmi Whiteman ( Lakota) Angela Miracle Gladue (Cree) Louis Campbell (Lumbee) and Keith Colston ( Lumbee – Tuscarora) The group has performed at community heritage celebrations as well as the Baltimore Museum of Art\, the Maryland Folklife Festival and The Kennedy Center.
