SUMMARY:Painting the Hammond Harwood House Spring Garden in Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Jean Brinton Jaecks will inspire students to paint the spring garden at the beautiful Hammond Harwood House. The garden surrounds the famous home\, with large boxwoods from the early 18 century\, urns filled with an abundance of flowers\, a dogwood tree and the enclosed brick wall with stunning views of the Naval Academy Chapel. Jean will give a Plein air watercolor demonstration and guidance throughout the afternoon in expressing light and atmosphere in watercolor. A critique will complete the day. \nJean Brinton Jaecks is a visual artist working in watercolor\, oil\, and egg tempera on vellum with gold and silver leaf. After Jean’s BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, she was honored with MICA’s Alfred and Trafford Klots International Artist Residency in Brittany. Her MFA thesis at George Washington University\, “A Garden Near and Far\,” celebrated her garden. Jean taught twenty years at the U.S. Botanic Garden in partnership with the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington\, D.C.; at St. John’s College in Annapolis; at the National Arboretum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. \nPlease bring your own painting materials to the event.

The changing urban landscape reflected the dramatic rise of new buildings creating distinct areas of commercial\, speculative\, and private spheres. DESCRIPTION:Behind the political drama of the early American republic stood a circle of brilliant and influential women who shaped the nation’s cultural life through their intellect\, taste\, and artistic patronage. Leading Ladies of Liberty explores the musical lives of figures such as Martha Jefferson Randolph\, an accomplished keyboard player who helped shape the musical life of Monticello; Dolley Madison\, whose celebrated Washington gatherings reflected the cultural refinements expected of the new capital; and Elizabeth Monroe\, whose years in France exposed her to the fashionable artistic traditions she later helped introduce to American society. \nIn this America 250 anniversary year\, the program highlights the musical traditions of early American society and the important role music played in the salons and parlors where conversation\, culture\, and identity helped define the young republic. Through songs and instrumental works of the period\, the concert offers a glimpse into the musical world of America’s founding generation. \nThe performance features soprano Elissa Edwards\, Artist-in-Residence at the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, joined by Wade Davis\, cello\, a featured soloist and chamber musician with many of the region’s leading early music ensembles\, and John Stowe\, organ\, former Professor of Organ and Harpsichord at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

DESCRIPTION:Meet living historian Daniel Sieh to explore the lives of Asian people in the American colonies in the 1700’s and discover some of the under told stories of the American Revolution. \nThrough documents\, activities\, and objects\, Daniel shares how global trade connected the lives of sailors\, soldiers\, traders\, and enslaved people from Asia as they navigated American society. \nThis is a drop-in style program. Visitors may join at any time during program hours and explore at their own pace through informal interaction and demonstrations. Advance registration recommended\, but not required.

DESCRIPTION:A tradition for over 50 years\, the William Paca Garden Plant Sale provides the opportunity to take home a piece of history. HA volunteers personally raise over 8\,000 plants – perennials\, annuals\, trees\, vines\, and vegetable starts – that represent the best of the old and the new. \n \nCertified as a Maryland’s Best Native Plants retailer\, HA is proud to be recognized by the Maryland Department of Agriculture as a retailer offering at least 20 percent of its plants that are native to our state. If you are keen to support bees\, butterflies\, hummingbirds\, and other native wildlife in your garden\, you will find plants that delight them here. \nStaff and volunteers are on hand to answer your gardening questions. Proceeds of this beloved annual tradition support the mission and programs of the William Paca House & Garden and Historic Annapolis. \nRegistration not required. The Plant Sale is held rain or shine. Pets are not permitted at the event.

The tour route is approximately 1/2 miles long and includes elevation changes and uneven walking surfaces. \nRecommended for ages 13+.
