SUMMARY:Leading Ladies of Liberty: Songs from the Lives and Legacies of America’s First Women
DESCRIPTION:Behind the political drama of the early American republic stood a circle of brilliant and influential women who shaped the nation’s cultural life through their intellect\, taste\, and artistic patronage. Leading Ladies of Liberty explores the musical lives of figures such as Martha Jefferson Randolph\, an accomplished keyboard player who helped shape the musical life of Monticello; Dolley Madison\, whose celebrated Washington gatherings reflected the cultural refinements expected of the new capital; and Elizabeth Monroe\, whose years in France exposed her to the fashionable artistic traditions she later helped introduce to American society. \nIn this America 250 anniversary year\, the program highlights the musical traditions of early American society and the important role music played in the salons and parlors where conversation\, culture\, and identity helped define the young republic. Through songs and instrumental works of the period\, the concert offers a glimpse into the musical world of America’s founding generation. \nThe performance features soprano Elissa Edwards\, Artist-in-Residence at the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, joined by Wade Davis\, cello\, a featured soloist and chamber musician with many of the region’s leading early music ensembles\, and John Stowe\, organ\, former Professor of Organ and Harpsichord at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

In honor of preservation month\, this talk highlights Annapolis’ architectural landscape in the 1700s.   \nThe years prior to the Revolutionary War were a time of vast economic growth and opportunity encompassing all levels of Annapolis society. The changing urban landscape reflected the dramatic rise of new buildings creating distinct areas of commercial\, speculative\, and private spheres. In her richly illustrated lecture\, Marcia Miller explores the many connections between the built environment and those who lived\, worked\, and labored in pre-Revolutionary Annapolis. \nThe Historic Annapolis Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. SUMMARY:Painting the Hammond Harwood House Spring Garden in Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Jean Brinton Jaecks will inspire students to paint the spring garden at the beautiful Hammond Harwood House. The garden surrounds the famous home\, with large boxwoods from the early 18 century\, urns filled with an abundance of flowers\, a dogwood tree and the enclosed brick wall with stunning views of the Naval Academy Chapel. Jean will give a Plein air watercolor demonstration and guidance throughout the afternoon in expressing light and atmosphere in watercolor. A critique will complete the day. \nJean Brinton Jaecks is a visual artist working in watercolor\, oil\, and egg tempera on vellum with gold and silver leaf. After Jean’s BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, she was honored with MICA’s Alfred and Trafford Klots International Artist Residency in Brittany. Her MFA thesis at George Washington University\, “A Garden Near and Far\,” celebrated her garden. Jean taught twenty years at the U.S. Botanic Garden in partnership with the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington\, D.C.; at St. John’s College in Annapolis; at the National Arboretum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. \nPlease bring your own painting materials to the event.

A knowledgeable docent will share its history from its Revolutionary beginnings during the time of William Paca\, signer of the Declaration of Independence\, to today. \nExplore the two-acre terraced landscape and formal parterres\, as well as the wilderness garden\, kitchen and medicinal gardens\, and orchard.
