SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Vanessa Racci: Italian Contributions to American Jazz
DESCRIPTION:NY jazz vocalist and recording artist Vanessa Racci is coming to Annapolis to talk about Italian contributions to American jazz over the past 100 Years. She’ll deliver one of the festival’s popular library lectures on Saturday morning of Weekend Two. \nIn the late 1800s and early 1900s\, Italian and Sicilians immigrated to New Orleans in droves and the socio-political environment for them was complicated. This new immigrant group interacted closely with African Americans\, facing similar discrimination. Their unique position and use of European instruments would play a role in shaping early jazz\, but there is much more to the story. \nRacci will show and tell how Italian Americans from New Orleans have contributed to the genre from inception to modern times – from Nick LaRocca and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to Leon Roppolo and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings in the 1920s to the Northern migration of jazz and beyond. Many jazz fans will be surprised to learn that Harry Warren was born Salvatore Antonio Guaragna. He contributed over 800 tunes to the great American Songbook! Listeners will learn of key musicians who are largely unknown today along with those whose work is widely celebrated\, such as Henry Mancini\, Frank Sinatra and Chick Corea. \nVanessa Racci has performed at such venues as Birdland and Gracie Mansion as well as the White Plains Jazz Festival and Scranton Jazz Festival. She has lectured at Rutgers University\, The Generoso Pope Italian American Cultural Center and The Italian American Museum of NYC. She has been a recipient of the Helen Hayes Award\, the Donna Distinta Award and the NOIAW Wise Woman Award. Audience members will be surprised at what they hear and leave feeling informed and satisfied with newfound knowledge and sense of appreciation. \nPresentations like this one at the Eastport-Annapolis Neck Library have been enormously popular since year one of festival. Enjoy music\, photography\, some book learning and a lively discussion led by an ebullient\, award-winning jazz artist. Bring your curiosity and your questions and come on out!

SUMMARY:Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival - Akua Allrich: Tribute to Miriam Makeba & Nina Simone
DESCRIPTION:Jazz vocalist Akua Allrich is a musician of extraordinary talent and crowd-moving passion. The charismatic vocalist\, composer\, and teacher has etched out a place for her unique musical expression\, electrifying audiences in and around the nation’s capital and far beyond\, through live performances and four major recordings. \nHer 2010 independent release\, A Peace of Mine\, created significant buzz with critics and music lovers\, earned international attention and won distribution through a Japanese record label one year later. Uniquely Standard: Akua Allrich Live! was released in 2012\, followed by Soul Singer in 2015. In March of 2026 she released Bonya. The live recording is a deeply personal tribute to her father’s legacy and reflects her Pan- African approach to musical expression. \nAllrich’s style is rooted in blues\, soul\, and rhythm and blues and jazz. With an open ear to the world’s music\, she sings in Portuguese\, French\, Spanish\, English\, Twi and Xhosa. She has been likened to legendary artists who were important civil rights activists: South Africa’s Miriam Makeba (1932-2008) and America’s Nina Simone (1933-2003).  In her Annapolis Jazz & Roots performance on November 14\, she’ll pay tribute to both while sharing her own acclaimed compositions. \nThe venue\, Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum\, could hardly be more appropriate. Audiences are invited to arrive early to take in the current art exhibition. She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. \nThis has been an amazing year for Akua Allrich. In addition to releasing her album Bonya\, she has partnered with acclaimed trumpeter and educator Dominick Farinacci as a featured vocalist for his multimedia production\, Behind the Lines: A 9/11 Story. The performance weaves jazz\, soul\, and narrative storytelling together to explore themes of resilience and memory. Dates for that project are interspersed with album release appearances featuring her signature band\, Akua Allrich & the Tribe. Those dates most often include internationally respected bassist Kris Funn. Her frequent and long-term collaborator\, Funn provides deep blues flavor and foundational grooves to the new album. \nAkua Allrich was educated at Howard University\, where she earned a bachelor of music in jazz vocals and a master’s degree in social work. She was mentored and coached by prominent jazz figures\, including her godmother Kehembe V. Eichelberger\, pianist Charles Covington\, and singer/drummer Grady Tate. Her father\, Agyei Akoto\, was a founding member of the spiritual jazz ensemble Nation. The family home held a wealth of cherished recordings that she and her siblings were invited to explore. (She did not buy any albums until her second year in college because her parents had such an amazing collection of jazz records!). One of the first jazz albums she bought was John Coltrane’s Live at the Village Vanguard: The Master Takes. It is serendipitous that Annapolis Jazz & Roots pays tribute to Coltrane on Opening Night! \nA mature\, respected yet ever evolving artist\, Akua Allrich has inspired music lovers from all walks of life. She has learned to see music as a tool for healing\, truth\, and empowerment Audiences have come to expect nothing short of brilliant artistry from her. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear her in Annapolis!

SUMMARY:Discovering American Art Annual Lectures: The Birth of Revolutionary Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, an 18th-century Anglo-Palladian house with a collection of American paintings and furniture\, is hosting its annual Discovering American Art lecture this year on the build-up to the American Revolution. Portraits of revolution-minded colonists and historic accounts of protest against taxation and other forms of oppression tell the story of events in the colonies. Many in America still saw themselves as British citizens and tried to maintain that lifestyle\, while others were beginning to resist the Crown and demand independence. A newly displayed portrait featuring Governor Horatio Sharpe provides a fascinating back story to the British point of view. \nPricing for this event includes both lectures as well as food and drink at the reception after. \n  \nSchedule:\n1:30 p.m. Door open\n2:00 p.m. Sons of Liberty: The Conversation Begins\, presented by Lucinda Dukes Edinberg\n3:00 -3:15 p.m. Break\n3:15-4:15 p.m. The Art of Conversation: British and American Painting in the 18th Century\, presented by David Gariff\, Ph.D\n4:15 p.m. Reception
