SUMMARY:Midwinter Melange at The Galleries at Quiet Waters Park
DESCRIPTION:Beginning January 28 and continuing through March 29\, 2026 in the Willow Gallery will hang  “Midwinter Melange.”  It is a collection of artwork in various media from the artists associated with the Art Committee who run the galleries at Quiet Waters Park.  The show will exhibit works in pastel\, oil\, ceramics\, stitchery\, weaving\, dyed silk scarves\, computer-generated art\, and watercolor. Many of the artists are retired art teachers who have found a wonderful extension of their lives become artists themselves. \nThe Opening Reception will be February 15\, 2026\, from 1:30 TO 3:30 in the Visitor Center. DESCRIPTION:andamio | scaffold\nDates: Wednesday\, February 4 – Thursday\, March 5\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, February 11\, 2026\, 6:00-7:00pm \nPanel Discussion with the artists: Wednesday\, February 11\, 2026\, 5:00-6:00pm \nJoin us for the Cade Gallery’s spring exhibition\, andamio | scaffold\, which brings together the work of Maria Luz Bravo\, Gerardo Camargo\, and Wilfredo Valladares Lara\, three artists whose personal histories and collective memory are bound to migration\, labor\, and the evolving landscapes of identity. Their work—using photography\, sculptural forms\, and reclaimed materials—reveals how movement across borders and cultures shapes not only individual lives\, but whole communities. Using the scaffold as a metaphor for holding weight during times of change and as a frame for transformation\, the exhibition speaks to cities\, materials\, and bodies as traces of ancestral journeys\, social struggle\, and creative resilience. Together\, the works map histories of displacement\, hope\, memory\, and belonging across generations and continents. andamio | scaffold invites viewers to see beyond surfaces—into the labor\, memory\, and enduring spirit that reconstructs identity and builds new foundations of belonging. \n\nMaria Luz Bravo’s (b. 1975\, Mexico) photographs examine the intersections of space\, politics\, and social resilience. With a background in architecture\, her practice explores the urban and architectural landscape as a lens to reveal broader social phenomena\, with a focus on cities in conflict\, contested political boundaries\, and the resilience of communities navigating instability. In keeping with this focus\, her recent series\, titled “Debris\,” captures the detritus—scraps of clothing\, utensils\, bags\, and other necessities—abandoned by immigrants making the perilous passage to the United States. Rejecting a longer view that might situate these discarded objects in a specific location or landscape\, Bravo instead turns her camera to the ground where her body is a corporeal reminder that this contested terrain was not always empty\, nor was it silent.  \n \nGerardo Camargo\, born in Mexico City\, explores the use of techniques and discarded materials traditionally used in building construction. In so doing\, his work combines abstraction with the aesthetics of American architecture. Rather than making use of pristine materials\, Camargo embraces the marks\, cuts\, scratches\, fingerprints\, and other evidence of utility and manipulation to speak to the past life and energy—the hidden effects of labor—evident in these objects. In so doing\, Camargo creates alternative narratives that foreground the acts carried by bodies in motion\, bodies engaged in labor\, so often erased in architecture and our built environment. For example\, American Landscape combines a paint spattered wooden ladder with carved mountainous form as an evocative reminder of the human toil and labor behind nearly every aspect of the urban landscape. \nArtist\, educator\, and curator\, Wilfredo Valladares\, originally from Honduras\, has built a practice that bridges cultures\, histories\, and lived experiences. His work has long sought to elevate the voices and cultural narratives of Latinx and Caribbean artists through public cross-cultural initiatives. In his interdisciplinary work\, he has consistently brought together unusual materials with themes around memory and migration to create compelling new forms that speak to both personal and broader cultural narratives. In his recent series\, created specifically for andamio | scaffold\, Valladares uses recycled materials\, found objects\, and mixed media to examine migration\, labor\, and political displacement. As in Gerardo Camargo’s work\, the materials make visible histories of use\, wear\, and endurance\, reflecting the physical and emotional realities of crossing borders\, working in unfamiliar spaces\, and living with and in uncertainty. In works like Cruzando Sueños\, Valladares draws on a complex interweaving of abstract and representational forms\, with layered\, often ambiguous meanings that speak to personal and collective narratives shaped by border crossings\, deportation\, and systems of power. DESCRIPTION:The Game We Play is a new series from The Artist Oliver James. A play on “The Debt You Owe\,” a previous series about national wealth built on native land\, this new series aims to put the focus on Black towns\, cities\, and communities that disappeared overnight. An attempt at celebrating what was created\, but also a realization of a current reality in their absence. While there isn’t a monopoly on gentrification\, it’s a game that African Americans know all too well. A game of cultural\, mental\, and physical survival on the move. \nThis exhibit is on view in our Patricia Barland Gallery from February 25 to April 7\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

DESCRIPTION:Throughout March (1-31) we are delighted to be showing “New Work” by Sigrid Trumpy. Although best known as a painter\, Sigrid also has extensive experience in etching and drypoint. This background plays an important role in her recent paintings\, where elements of printmaking naturally find their way into her work. Fine linear marks appear throughout the surfaces\, echoing the qualities of etched lines. \nRather than aiming for polished perfection\, Sigrid allows imperfections to remain visible. These irregular marks showing the movement of a living hand at work share her process as it unfolds.

SUMMARY:The Human Condition: Art From the Heart
DESCRIPTION:The Human Condition: Art from the Heart is a new multimedia art exhibition rooted in personal experience\, community\, and creative expression. The project was inspired by Liminal Spaces\, a series of collaborative poetry and art shows held at the Arts Lab. \nLora Moran-Collins\, a co-founding member and studio artist at the Arts Lab\, drew on both her artistic background and her long-time involvement with Families Anonymous to envision a space where FA members and local artists could come together. Through a series of art workshops held over the past year\, participants explored and expressed the complex emotions surrounding addiction\, grief\, resilience\, and loss. \nThe resulting collection of artwork\, poetry\, music\, and photography will be celebrated at an opening reception on Sunday\, March 22\, from 1–3 PM. The exhibition will be on view at the Arts Lab from March 22 through June 7\, 2026.
