DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

GILLESPIE PRESENTS\nEvery Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? \nExhibition of street portraits\, cosmic images and photographs capturing people\, places and passing moments opens Sept. 10 at Chesapeake Arts Center \nPhotography doesn’t end when Paul W. Gillespie’s workday does.\nFor more than three decades\, Gillespie has worked as a newspaper photojournalist\, photographing\nassignments throughout Anne Arundel County and beyond. But photography has never been limited to his\nwork. For years\, he has continued to photograph simply because it is how he experiences the world—from\nthe moon overhead to the people and passing moments he encounters on the street.\nThat personal work is at the heart of his new solo exhibition\, Every Picture Tells a Story\, Don’t It? People\,\nPlaces\, and Passing Moments\, opening Sept. 10 at the Patricia Barland Gallery at Chesapeake Arts Center.\nThe exhibition runs Sept. 10 through Nov. 8\, 2026\, with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10.\nThe exhibition brings together Gillespie’s street portraits and work made primarily over the past several\nyears\, along with photographs of musicians\, places and fleeting moments that caught his attention. It also\nincludes photographs of the moon\, a subject dear to his heart. A selection of images from his Journalists\nMatter: Faces of the Capital Gazette project connects the exhibition to an important chapter of his life while\nkeeping the focus on the broader range of work he has made away from his newspaper assignments.\n“Photography doesn’t end when my workday does\,” Gillespie said. “I’ve been doing this for so long that it’s\nreally more a way of life than a job. I see someone or something that makes me stop. If it’s a person\, I want\nto meet them\, learn about them and\, hopefully\, capture something of their story in my photographs so I can\nshare it with others. My hope is that by sharing those stories\, we might become a little more understanding\nand empathetic toward one another.”\nGillespie’s approach remains rooted in the idea of photography as capturing a moment that existed in front\nof his camera. His photographs are\, above all\, records of moments he encountered and chose to preserve.\nAt the center of much of his work are the people he meets and the stories they carry\, with each photograph\nan attempt to convey something of who they are and what makes them worth seeing.\nThat approach is particularly evident in Gillespie’s street portraits\, many of which began with encounters\nthat developed into relationships over time. Rather than simply documenting a face\, he looks for a\nphotograph that can give viewers a glimpse of the person behind it.\nThe exhibition’s title reflects Gillespie’s belief that photographs can carry stories beyond the moment in\nwhich they were made. Sometimes the story is found in the circumstances surrounding the photograph.\nSometimes it is in the person looking back at the camera. SUMMARY:Miguel Braceli: UNBURIAL
DESCRIPTION:Unburial treats absence as a site for learning and reflection. The void left by the Liberty Tree becomes more than metaphor: an art intervention transforms it into a place to be repurposed and reclaimed through rituals and celebrations that probe what freedom means today. \nOn the front lawn\, where the Liberty Tree once stood\, the artist Miguel Braceli has installed a 40′-diameter circle of cemetery vases filled with common wildflowers. It calls attention to the tree’s absence and reclaims it as a tree for all people\, not just the privileged and elite (e.g.\, the Sons of Liberty and the four Annapolis signers of the Declaration of Independence). \nIn the museum\, Braceli\, with a team of fabricators\, created three enormous murals and two other works. The murals perform an autopsy of the tree. The largest multiplies the tulip poplar’s distinctive leaf shape across a 33′-long wall in a wind-swept swirl of energy (the leaves were made from stencils of the Liberty Tree scion’s actual leaves). A second mural abstracts the tree’s tangled root system into a water-bearing drawing (using PVC tubing) that sprouts purple carnations. The third mural’s subject is the tree’s massive trunk\, which was cut to pieces in 1999\, with much of the wood later finding commemorative as Liberty Tree guitars\, conference tables\, and bible boxes. Onto nine chalkboards\, Braceli has mounted nine pieces of raw wood\, each supporting live orchids. What can we learn anew from this tree?\, it seems to ask. \nThe two other works urge us to turn away from nation-state identities and to look and listen more closely to nature. A sculptural ear is mounted onto the red silhouette of a rose petal\, borrowed from the work of Columbia-born\, Venezuela-based artist Roberto Obregoń. Nearby\, a flag of yellow roses hangs from a flagpole that has been fabricated from a branch. \nAdmission & Hours \nFree & open to the public \nWednesday\, Thursday\, Saturday\, and Sunday\, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nOpen Fridays\, 12 to 7:30 p.m. \nParking & Accessibility \nFree parking is available on campus after 5 p.m. during the week and all day on weekends. Handicap parking spots are located in the Edensword Parking lot off of St. John’s Street between College Avenue and Calvert Street (at the yellow house). The museum is located on the ground floor of Mellon Hall. \nPresented in collaboration with Annapolis Pride\, Historic Annapolis\, and the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs. SUMMARY:Surveilled or Seen: Sinew of Trust in the Video of Marina Abramović and Lynda Benglis
DESCRIPTION:The idea of this exhibition is grounded in a question: what is the difference between being looked at versus being witnessed? Between being invasively surveilled versus deeply seen? \nMarina Abramović and Lynda Benglis — with Rest Energy (1980) and Lynda Benglis’ Monitor (1999)\, respectively — explore what it costs us to trust each other and how important it is that we do. As we watch these two videos unfold\, we are invited to sit with how much social cynicism deteriorates us\, if we allow it to take over and transform our will to trust into one to control. As an antidote to this\, each artist seems to posit that we must instead relinquish control if we hope to be loved. Love\, then\, becomes indistinguishable from the act of choosing not to monitor someone fearfully\, but to witness them vulnerably. \nIt is a terrifying and brave\, humbling and life-giving choice. We hope watching these works of art help it become easier to make. \nFunding for this project was provided by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt\, and the Arts Council for Anne Arundel County.

Join photographer Kaitlyn McQuaid for “First Exposure\,” a 4-week digital photography workshop covering the foundations of photography. This workshop will run for 2 hours each week\, and we’ll cover one element of photography in-depth\, including Aperture\, ISO\, Shutter Speed\, Lighting\, and Composition. We’ll practice with in-class\, hands-on exercises\, and tips for capturing moments on your own outside of class. \n\nNOTES\n\nYou will receive an email 1 week before class starts with additional information. \n\n\n\nClass Requirements\n\n\n\n\nA digital DSLR camera is strongly recommended\, but if you only have a sophisticated point-and-shoot\, we are happy to have you as well. Just be mindful that some point-and-shoots don’t always let you adjust as many settings. DESCRIPTION:Antonín Dvořák In Nature’s Realm\, Op. 91\nJennifer Higdon Cello Concerto\,\nwith Julian Schwarz\, cello\nManuel de Falla El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) \nThis concert is approximately 2 hours in length\, with a 20 minute intermission. \nFrom the sunlit beauty of Bohemia to the fiery rhythms of Spain\, this concert bursts with color and energy. Antonín Dvořák’s In Nature’s Realm opens the performance with radiant melodies inspired by the natural world. Cellist Julian Schwarz returns to perform the vivid Cello Concerto by Jennifer Higdon\, one of the most successful and prolific contemporary composers in the United States today. The concert ends in a blaze of dance and celebration with Manuel de Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat). Dancers Erin Jenkins and Collin from Ballet Theatre of Maryland will join us to bring the dances to life on stage. Soprano Judy Yannini will perform from offstage during the Introduction and The Miller’s Dance movements.
