SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

SUMMARY:Legacy & Light: Chesapeake Arts Center's 25th Anniversary Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Chesapeake Arts Center’s 25th Anniversary celebration\, the Legacy & Light Exhibitions honor the artists\, stories\, and creative vision that have shaped CAC over the past quarter century—while looking ahead to the next generation of artistic expression. \nThe Legacy Exhibition brings together past CAC artists working in a wide range of disciplines\, including oil\, photography\, ceramics\, woodworking\, textiles\, mixed media\, watercolor\, and acrylic. These works reflect the depth\, diversity\, and lasting impact of the artistic community that has grown alongside CAC since its founding in 2001. \nThe Light exhibition will feature an exploration of light as both a medium and concept\, and artwork that glows under a UV/blacklight. CAC has illuminated pathways for artistic expression and community connection over the past 25 years\, and Light is essential to how we experience art—it shapes perception\, highlights detail\, and creates atmosphere—but it also symbolizes something larger: clarity\, possibility\, and forward movement. This exhibition invites artists to step into a reimagined space—one that symbolizes innovation\, experimentation\, and the evolving future of the arts at CAC. In this exhibition\, what was once unseen becomes visible\, reminding us that the future is not fixed\, but something we create together. \nApplications will be accepted through Friday\, May 29\,2026. \nReception is June 25\, 2026 from 6-8pm and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Magic Strings\, Youth Violin Ensemble from Estonia Performance
DESCRIPTION:Magic Strings (Volkuleesed)\, composed of a renowned group of talented violinists\, ages 12-16\, from Estonia\,  will perform at First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis  171 Duke of Gloucester Street. Annapolis\, MD on Friday\, August 21 at 7 PM\,  and at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church  461 College Parkway Arnold\, Maryland\, on Tuesday\, August 25\, at 7 PM. \n“Magic Strings” began in 2012 at the Music School of the Old Town School of Tallinn\, under violin teacher Tereza Šmerling. The group of ten perform repertoire including classical\, folk\, film music\, contemporary and sometimes all in one concert.   In recent years “Magic Strings” has expanded into studio recordings and music video productions\, viewable on You Tube. The ensemble has toured  Europe\, North America\, Asia\, and Australia. \nThe program is presented by World Artists Experiences in cooperation with the Embassy of Estonia free of charge. Through music\, laughter\, friendship and a little bit of magic\, they discover a truth every child (and every adult) needs to hear: The talent was inside them all along. \nExperience a celebration of courage\, confidence and believing in yourself at the upcoming production of The Talent Machine: The Show That Started It All\, August 14 through 23 at Anne Arundel Community College. Presented by The Talent Machine Company\, our theater group’s origin story comes to life with our younger cast members\, ages 7 to 14\, guided by an all-alumni crew of directors\, music directors and choreographers who have returned to share the joy of musical theater with the next generation. Evening and matinee performances available. All tickets just $20. American Sign Language interpretation available during the 2 pm show on August 15.
