SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

SUMMARY:Framing and Finishing: Woodworking in the Colonial Age
DESCRIPTION:Well before America declared its independence in 1776\, a building boom across the colonies meant that architects\, carpenters\, and artisans needed expertise\, materials\, and tools. Tools were specific to the role of carpenter\, joiner\, master\, journeyman\, apprentice\, and the unskilled labor force\, which would have included slave labor. \nThis exhibition represents more than 50 user-made and commercially produced house-building tools utilized by 18th-century woodworkers. Tools for framing a house\, along with those for finishing the interior–floors\, doors\, cornices\, windows\, shutters\, and chair rails-are represented. British and American wood planes\, measuring devices\, knives and saws\, braces\, and other implements are each a piece of art\, each used for a specific purpose. We acknowledge the skill and resourcefulness of these craftsmen and their part in building a new nation.

SUMMARY:Abjection and Alienation: Video Works by Martha Rosler and Pipilotti Rist
DESCRIPTION:A visceral comparison of two influential works of video art: Blutclip (1993) by Swiss visual artist Pipilotti Rist and Vital Statistics of a Citizen\, Simply Obtained (1977) by American conceptual artist Martha Rosler. \nThis exhibition invites you to compare these two works; to explore how each show the female body as transmogrified by society into a thing both abject and alien. Of equal importance\, we invite you to interrogate the different ways human beings are systematically controlled and dehumanized—not only women\, but also ‘foreigners’ and ‘citizens’. These works dare to ask how a person can feel both alien and native at the same time\, bound or unbound\, home or not-at-home. They challenge the societal forces that create this rending state of being. \nThematic questions we encourage you to consider while viewing these works include: Why do we otherize people? How can an objectified person reclaim feeling human? DESCRIPTION:Water\, Water on the Wall at The Galleries at Quiet Waters with Artists Annette Uroskie and Joan Machinchick\n\nBoth the Willow and the Garden galleries will hold the watercolor works of Annette Uroskie and Joan Machinchick from May 27 to July 27\, 2026; their exhibit is titled “Water\, Water on the Wall.  Annette and Joan have enjoyed a long friendship\, met through sailing but drawn together through a love of art.  They share a mutual awe of the majesty of life-giving water which coaxes the garden into bloom\, and enlivens the paint into art.  They portray its surface\, its depths\, its moods\, its life within and the line where it meets the land and earth comes alive. \nThe Opening Reception will be held on May 31 from 1:30 to 3:30.  The Visitor Center\, home to the Galleries\,  is open from 9 – 4 on weekdays and 10 – 4 on weekends.  Entrance to the park is $6. per vehicle; fee is waived for the Reception only.

DESCRIPTION:Green \nAACC’s 2026 National Juried Art Exhibition \n  \nDATES: April 28 — July 14\, 2026  \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION: April 29\, 5 — 7 pm with juror remarks at 6 pm. \n  \n“Nature’s first green is gold.” — Robert Frost \n“It’s not easy being green.” — Kermit the Frog \n\nJoin us for Cade Art Gallery’s 2026 National Juried Art Exhibition\, Green\, juried by New York-based art historian and curator Roberto C. Ferrari. Featuring a range of artworks in painting\, sculpture\, ceramics\, textiles\, printmaking\, photography\, and video\, the exhibition asks us to consider how this hue and its saturation and values appeal to the senses\, and how Green can address issues ranging from nature and health to politics and religion. Green can also be represented in its most abstract form\, and the absence of Green can be as important as its presence. \n\nOak leaves waving from the limbs of a tree\, grass underfoot\, pine needles glistening with dew. Green is nature\, the flora that grows from the earth\, nourished by sunlight and fed by rain. Parsley\, sage\, thyme. Green is an herbaceous taste that tingles the tongue with savor. A combination of blue and yellow\, a complement of red. Green is a secondary hue that has permeated the history of painting: Mrs. Arnolfini’s enveloping gown; the forests of Poussin and the waterlilies of Monet; Matisse’s stripe of a shadow and Kelly’s purist field of color; Van Gogh’s anxious landscapes and Salman Toor’s queer acidic spaces. Camouflage: protection or aggression? Verdigris: decay or patination? Phlegm\, mold\, corrosion. Green is organic and sickly\, a sign of the need for a cure. Patriotism\, eco-nationalism\, spirituality. Green is a symbol in the hearts and minds of the People. Celadon\, emerald\, moss. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Chesapeake Arts Center’s 25th Anniversary celebration\, the Legacy & Light Exhibitions honor the artists\, stories\, and creative vision that have shaped CAC over the past quarter century—while looking ahead to the next generation of artistic expression. \nThe Legacy Exhibition brings together past CAC artists working in a wide range of disciplines\, including oil\, photography\, ceramics\, woodworking\, textiles\, mixed media\, watercolor\, and acrylic. These works reflect the depth\, diversity\, and lasting impact of the artistic community that has grown alongside CAC since its founding in 2001. \nThe Light exhibition will feature an exploration of light as both a medium and concept\, and artwork that glows under a UV/blacklight. CAC has illuminated pathways for artistic expression and community connection over the past 25 years\, and Light is essential to how we experience art—it shapes perception\, highlights detail\, and creates atmosphere—but it also symbolizes something larger: clarity\, possibility\, and forward movement. This exhibition invites artists to step into a reimagined space—one that symbolizes innovation\, experimentation\, and the evolving future of the arts at CAC. In this exhibition\, what was once unseen becomes visible\, reminding us that the future is not fixed\, but something we create together. \nApplications will be accepted through Friday\, May 29\,2026. \nReception is June 25\, 2026 from 6-8pm and open to the public.

After the credits roll\, dive deeper into post-screening conversations that explore themes\, techniques\, and the lasting impact of these remarkable works. \nOf course\, no proper film night is complete without snacks and sips to fuel the experience and discussions. \nJune Screening: El Topo\, (1970) directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky\nConsidered to be the beginning of the “Midnight Movie\,” Alejandro Jodorowsky’s mind-bending odyssey\, El Topo (1970) is part spaghetti western and part spiritual acid trip. \nThe film follows El Topo\, a violent gunslinger\, who rides a mystical desert on horseback with his young\, naked son\, Hijo. After stumbling upon a ravaged village\, he avenges the slaughter and claims the gang leader’s mistress\, Mara\, for himself. Mara refuses to love El Topo unless he proves himself the greatest gunfighter. To accomplish this\, he abandons Hijo to a group of monks and embarks on a violent\, spiritual journey across the desert to confront four legendary “gun masters.” \nFull of haunting\, bizarre\, and beautiful imagery. Jodorowsky was a part of the Panic Movement\, a chaotic response to surrealism’s mainstream acceptance in the 1960s. This movement aimed to shock audiences and disrupt societal norms. Combine that with Jodorowsky’s personal mysticism\, and you get El Topo. A film that rejects normal/linear storytelling in favor of the subconscious\, the irrational\, and the symbolic. El Topo is a hallucinatory experience\, a bizarre\, dreamlike meditation on ego\, religion\, and the futility of violence. Ironically\, despite all of that\, El Topo marks the beginning of Jodorowsky’s impact on the cultural mainstream\, which can be seen to this day\, in the existence of the Midnight Movie to his famously unmade adaptation of Dune that influenced and created the visual identity of sci-fi cornerstones like Star Wars\, the Alien franchise\, and The Fifth Element. \nAs usual\, we will be discussing the film and the music afterward with drinks and nibbles. \nWe look forward to seeing you at AND Film Club! \nDoors open at 6 pm / Program rolls at 6:30 pm \n…………………………………….. \nCome curious\, leave inspired. \n\n\n\n\n
