SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

Recognizing that the history of our nation is an ongoing journey\, still unfolding and evolving\, we encourage artists to delve deeply into their personal perspectives as well as the broader community narratives. By doing so\, they will explore the cultural richness and profound connections that unite us\, inviting viewers to reflect on the shared journey of our collective history. Join us as we honor the past while inspiring the future through creativity and storytelling.\n\n\nThis exhibit at BWI Marshall Airport provides an excellent opportunity for local Anne Arundel County artists to showcase their talents to thousands of travelers. DESCRIPTION:June 6 – June 28\, 2026 \nClap if you believe . . . \n Quiet Waters Park and the Friends of Quiet Waters Park Sculpture Committee  are\, by popular demand\, again hosting  this year’s Fairy House Festival! \n Residents of Anne Arundel County create and submit a Fairy House made of materials found in nature to be on display within the woods of Quiet Waters Park.  The response this year has been overwhelming and the submission limit has been reached.  Dozens upon dozens of fairy houses\, each wonderfully unique will be on display along the Holly Pavilion Trail from June 6 through June 28.  Don’t miss this peek at our very own Fairy neighborhood! \n The event is free to all (there is a park admission fee of $8) and donations to the Friends of Quiet Waters Park help to make this event happen.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture – Citizen Science in the Chesapeake on the Eve of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with the first European settlement at Jamestown\, Virginia\, in 1607\, until the 1775 battles at Lexington and Concord\, Massachusetts\, the Chesapeake region inspired interest among soldiers\, merchants\, and gentleman scholars in the Old World. Self-trained\, amateur scientists like Thomas Jefferson fed that interest by committing their observations to paper. They sent letters and samples to correspondents in the Old World\, most of whom held university degrees\, at a time when education focused on classical literature and philosophy\, theology\, and the law. \nThese early Chesapeake scholars—whether roaming the countryside or making observations in their own gardens—are the intellectual ancestors of today’s citizen scientists\, amateurs of all ages and backgrounds engaged in the advancement of knowledge through observation\, measurement\, analysis\, and reporting of the world around them. This presentation explores that history from the vantage of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s Citizen Science in Archaeology program\, participation in which is open to you. \nThe Historic Annapolis Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.
