SUMMARY:She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory
DESCRIPTION:The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum proudly announces its newest exhibition\, She Speaks: Black Women Artists and the Power of Historical Memory–a visionary presentation that examines the 250-year history of the United States of America through a Black Feminist lens. This exhibition brings together a powerful constellation of contemporary Maryland-based and internationally recognized Black women artists whose deeply personal and politically charged works bear witness to the past\, illuminate its impact on the present\, and conjure Afrofuturist visions. \nThrough a diverse range of media—including collage\, painting\, print\, photography\, textile\, installation\, and time-based media—She Speaks acknowledges Black women as active participants in the making of this country rather than passive bystanders\, highlighting artists who operate as historians\, archivists\, and scholars to tell their stories. Presented alongside rarely seen archival materials and family heirlooms\, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role Black women have played in shaping and preserving this nation since the Revolutionary era\, while envisioning liberated futures through cosmic speculation. \nFeatured artists include Elizabeth Catlett\, Alanna Fields\, Dr. Joan M. E. Gaither\, Charlyn Griffith-Oro\, Khaleelah I. L. Harris\, Martha Jackson Jarvis\, Fabiola Jean-Louis\, Jeannine Kayembe-Oro\, Zsudayka Nzinga\, Ada Pinkston\, Beverly Price\, Faith Ringgold\, Noreen Smith\, Darlene R. Taylor\, Jessica Valoris\, Savannah G. M. Wood\, and Alisha B. Wormsley. \nAs the nation collectively commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through coordinated national\, Maryland 250\, and Annapolis 250 initiatives\, this exhibition enters the conversation by expanding how American history is remembered and told. By retracing and reinterpreting these histories through the voices of Black women\, the exhibition challenges audiences to consider whose stories have been preserved\, and whose have yet to be fully recognized. \nShe Speaks is curated by Martina Dodd\, BDTM Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, with curatorial support from Leslie Rose\, Exhibit Manager. Lending institutions include Academy Art Museum\, Galerie Myrtis\, Howard University Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.\, James E. Lewis Museum of Art\, and Reginald F. Lewis Museum. \nShe Speaks will open to the public with an Opening Reception and Black History Month celebration on Saturday\, February 7\, 2026. The exhibition will remain on view through January 16\, 2027\, with interpretive programming offered throughout the year to further engage with the exhibition’s themes of history\, memory\, resistance\, and Black women’s enduring contributions to the nation’s cultural and civic life.

Join us as we honor the past while inspiring the future through creativity and storytelling.\n\n\nThis exhibit at BWI Marshall Airport provides an excellent opportunity for local Anne Arundel County artists to showcase their talents to thousands of travelers. SUMMARY:Framing and Finishing: Woodworking in the Colonial Age
DESCRIPTION:Well before America declared its independence in 1776\, a building boom across the colonies meant that architects\, carpenters\, and artisans needed expertise\, materials\, and tools. Tools were specific to the role of carpenter\, joiner\, master\, journeyman\, apprentice\, and the unskilled labor force\, which would have included slave labor. \nThis exhibition represents more than 50 user-made and commercially produced house-building tools utilized by 18th-century woodworkers. Tools for framing a house\, along with those for finishing the interior–floors\, doors\, cornices\, windows\, shutters\, and chair rails-are represented. British and American wood planes\, measuring devices\, knives and saws\, braces\, and other implements are each a piece of art\, each used for a specific purpose. We acknowledge the skill and resourcefulness of these craftsmen and their part in building a new nation.

SUMMARY:Abjection and Alienation: Video Works by Martha Rosler and Pipilotti Rist
DESCRIPTION:A visceral comparison of two influential works of video art: Blutclip (1993) by Swiss visual artist Pipilotti Rist and Vital Statistics of a Citizen\, Simply Obtained (1977) by American conceptual artist Martha Rosler. \nThis exhibition invites you to compare these two works; to explore how each show the female body as transmogrified by society into a thing both abject and alien. Of equal importance\, we invite you to interrogate the different ways human beings are systematically controlled and dehumanized—not only women\, but also ‘foreigners’ and ‘citizens’. These works dare to ask how a person can feel both alien and native at the same time\, bound or unbound\, home or not-at-home. They challenge the societal forces that create this rending state of being. \nThematic questions we encourage you to consider while viewing these works include: Why do we otherize people? How can an objectified person reclaim feeling human? How can I be whole again? \nThis exhibition is sponsored by Laura Ricciardelli and David Watt. \nHOURS AND ADMISSION: Thursday\, Saturday\, and Sunday\, 10am-6pm; Friday\, 2-7:30pm. Interested artists and crafters of all ages can submit their paintings\, drawings\, graphic designs\, photography\, collages\, poetry/written word submissions\, and handicrafts (anything that can be hung on the wall!)  to be part of our “Share Your Story With Pride” Art Show. \nArt submissions will be accepted at the Odenton Library\, Maryland City at Russet Library\, and Severna Park Library from Tuesday\, May 26 through Tuesday\, June 23. Please fill out the Submission Form to turn in with your artwork (attached below or available at the art submission branches). A virtual submission can be submitted here. \nThe Art Reception will be on Monday\, June 29\, from 6 pm – 7:30 pm. The art will be displayed in our meeting room until Tuesday\, August 11\, and can be viewed during our Queer Pride Hangout and Gallery Hours. \nDon’t know what to make? Come to one of our tie-in art programs at the Severna Park Library\, Odenton Library\, or Maryland City at  Russett Library. \nSubmissions are open to people of all ages connected to the broad and inclusive umbrella of the LGBTQ+ community. Art can be displayed anonymously or under a pseudonym. \nFor more information\, call the Odenton Library at (410) 222-6277.

DESCRIPTION:Green \nAACC’s 2026 National Juried Art Exhibition \n  \nDATES: April 28 — July 14\, 2026  \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION: April 29\, 5 — 7 pm with juror remarks at 6 pm. \n  \n“Nature’s first green is gold.” — Robert Frost \n“It’s not easy being green.” — Kermit the Frog \n\nJoin us for Cade Art Gallery’s 2026 National Juried Art Exhibition\, Green\, juried by New York-based art historian and curator Roberto C. Ferrari. Featuring a range of artworks in painting\, sculpture\, ceramics\, textiles\, printmaking\, photography\, and video\, the exhibition asks us to consider how this hue and its saturation and values appeal to the senses\, and how Green can address issues ranging from nature and health to politics and religion. Green can also be represented in its most abstract form\, and the absence of Green can be as important as its presence. \n\nOak leaves waving from the limbs of a tree\, grass underfoot\, pine needles glistening with dew. Green is nature\, the flora that grows from the earth\, nourished by sunlight and fed by rain. Parsley\, sage\, thyme. Green is an herbaceous taste that tingles the tongue with savor. A combination of blue and yellow\, a complement of red. Green is a secondary hue that has permeated the history of painting: Mrs. Arnolfini’s enveloping gown; the forests of Poussin and the waterlilies of Monet; Matisse’s stripe of a shadow and Kelly’s purist field of color; Van Gogh’s anxious landscapes and Salman Toor’s queer acidic spaces. Camouflage: protection or aggression? Verdigris: decay or patination? Phlegm\, mold\, corrosion. Green is organic and sickly\, a sign of the need for a cure. Patriotism\, eco-nationalism\, spirituality. Green is a symbol in the hearts and minds of the People. Celadon\, emerald\, moss. DESCRIPTION:Paul Reed Smith Eightlock VI is a band of high-level musicians who are friends and have\, “locked”together\, recording and performing a new kind of groove with its roots in Baltimore funk\, DC go-go and New Orleans swing. The band’s sound is a heady brew of blues\, soul\, rock\, funk\, and other roots sounds\, all stirred-up into a “Groove-Alicious Gumbo.” The line-up is drums\, bass\, a female singer and three guitar players… And the excitement around their “Groove-Alicious Gumbo” is infectious. Drummer Greg Grainger (Whitney Houston\, Acoustic Alchemy\, Maysa\, Kim Waters); Bassist Gary Grainger has performed with John Scofield\, Nancy Wilson\, George Duke\, and Bill Evans. Vocalist Mia Samone Davis has a beautiful multifaceted voice that got its start in gospel music at a very young age. Guitarist Mike Ault regularly performs with high caliber artists including Carlos Santana\, David Grissom\, and Davy Knowles. Guitarist Bill Nelson is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center where he was introduced and invited to join the band in their efforts to raise money for cancer patients and families.
