Leadership Anne Arundel Day with the Arts

Leadership Anne Arundel, a program devoted to fostering leadership and familiarizing future Anne Arundel County leaders with the County, had a very successful Arts Day this month  with the help of the Arts Council and several community volunteers and LAA alumni.

The day began at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

The day began with an overview presentation given by Arts Council Executive DIrector April Nyman.  The class of approximately 40 professionals and volunteers interested in developing leadership skills,  was then treated to a hands-on learning experience led by students from Bates Middle School. The hands-on learning experience was coordinated by Arts Integration Specialist Laura Wixon. The LAA students were divided up into four groups and utilized poetry, visual arts, and movement to  process information and express thoughts.

Vice President of Marketing and Development at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, Donna Anderson gave a tour of the building which houses art classes, artist studios, exhibit space. performance space . Maryland Hall is also home of the Annapolis Opera, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra,  Ballet Theater of Maryland, and Live Arts Maryland.

The Day continued with a walk through the Annapolis Arts and Entertainment District and re-convened at the Metropolitan Kitchen and Lounge where members of the flagship class broke out into roundtable discussions organized by Annapolis General Manager Kathy Swekel, with Directors and Representatives of seven historic preservation and art nonprofits.

Local arts patron and restauranteur Gavin Buckley spoke about the Art and Entertainment District and its affect on local business. A panel discussion after lunch featured  Arts Council Board Member Roberta Pardo, former Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer, and artist Jeff Huntington in a panel discussion of Art in Public Places.

The class then walked to the Compass Rose Theater and were greeted by founder and director Lucinda Merry Browne who treated them to an excerpt from Camelot currently playing at Compass Rose.  (Their next show will be “God of Carnage”) .The three lead actors performed several songs and then the stage was turned over to the percussive dance group Footworks who gave a  performance and taught the LAA participants some forms of percussive dance and lead and follow chant singing.  A successful day, many of the participants promised to return soon to see more performances with their friends and families and to sign up their children for art classes.  The 2017 Arts Day was chaired by writer/artist  Nadja Maril, LAA Flagship graduate class of 2002;

Films, Artists, Music Celebrating the Arts This Weekend in Annapolis

The first weekend in April is almost here and with it arrives a bevy of arts events in Anne Arundel County.  Three tempting choices are taking place in Annapolis beginning with The Annapolis Film Festival, which kicks off on Thursday March 3lst. In just four days, 70 films– ful length features, shorts, and documentaries— will be shown on 7 screens. Friday and Saturday night at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, the  Annapolis Symphony Orchestra with conductor José-Luis Novo and featuring  renowned English pianist Michael Roll will perform works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Schubert in a concert entitled “Unanswered Questions.”.

Saturday night, April 2nd, from 7 p.m. to 10 pm the public is invited to join The Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s  College for an “Evening in an Artist Colony.”  Begin by viewing the current museum exhibit “American impressionism; The Lure of the Artist Colony”  and then stroll  to The Great Hall for food drink and the Rockin Music of The Tiki Barbarians.  Non gallery member tickets are $45 (members $35). Dancing and an array of food and drink will celebrate the life of an artist during the 20th century.

So where and how do you divide up your weekend?  One of the wonderful elements of the Annapolis Film Festival, now in its fourth year is the opportunity to interact with screenwriters, directors, actors, producers, and filmmakers.  Panel discussions, along with Q and A’s enable attendees to gain an intimate knowledge of the film making process. Venues where the 70 films will be shown include:, St. John’s College Francis Scott Key auditorium and  Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Maryland Hall  is also the venue for the ASO’s 8:00 p.m. concert performance on Friday and Saturday while The Mitchell Gallery is in the same building as The Key Auditorium on the St. John’s College campus.  Is it possible to take in all three experiences in one weekend?  It certainly is, with the locations so conveniently close.  Whether you live in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, or are visiting for the weekend, this is a great time to enjoy the Arts!

 

Poe Inspires Mural

A blue ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of the completion of the mural by artist Jeff Huntington, winner of the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County Mural Design Competition, took place recently at the site of the building location at 47 Spa Road.  The artist spoke the following words:

“The Poe mural is a tribute to the creative people of Annapolis, especially to those who have dedicated their lives unconditionally to their chosen craft out of necessity, out of love, our of their own primal urge to create. Artists are not marginal to society but are the fabric of soceity.

In additional to enriching the artistic landscape of Annapolis, my hope for this mural is to inspire conversation to educate or remind people about the life and career of Edgar Allan Poe, his genius and the hardship endured by this great American icon; to appreciate the hard work and life-long dedication of artists in general that often goes unrewarded.”

The artwork by Jeff Huntington brings a new perspective to the plain white wall and vacant lot that sits diagonally across from Park Place and the traffic circle. Huntington , who lives in Annapolis, earned his BFA at the Corcoran School of Art and Design and his MFA from the  Chicago Art Institute. Huntington’s work has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C. and Miami.

Members of the community celebrated with Poe inspired music and poetry at nearby ARTfarm. The mural resides on a building owned by Chuck Walsh and Ken Wagner adjacent to the Lot owned by Michael Gardiner where  the gathering took place.

The recent Mural Contest is just one type of project to promote the arts, funded by the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County . The Arts Council also awards mini grants, strategic grants and Arts-in-Education grants in addition to providing support, advocacy, and resources for Arts and Historic Preservation. Near the Westgate Circle welcoming you into the Arts & Entertainment District of Annapolis on the east side of Spa Road, is the winning mural of the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County’s recent Mural Design Competition. The artwork by Jeff Huntington brings a new perspective to the plain white wall and vacant lot that sits diagonally across from Park Place and the traffic circle .  It’s a busy intersection and a lively neighborhood filled with art, theater, and restaurants.  Look closely and you’ll see flying geese, a lighthouse and a host of  multiple faces.

Jeff Huntington earned his BFA at the Corcoran School of Art and Design and his MFA from the  Chicago Art Institute. He lives in Annapolis and likes to create portraits that evolve and can be layered to depict multiple views.  As you walk past this mural, you’ll notice your eyes will focus on different things.  Huntington’s work has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C. and Miami.

New Management for Annapolis Art & Entertainment District

It’s official. The Annapolis Arts and Entertainment District is now under the management of the Inner West Street Association(IWSA).Representatives of the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County and IWSA recently gathered to officially transfer management of the Annapolis Arts & Entertainment District to IWSA as shown in the photo above.

The Annapolis Art and Entertainment District includes Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, the Stanton Center, the Compass Rose Theater, artist studios, restaurants and businesses. Coming up soon is the First Sunday Arts Festival on Sunday August second. Other festivals that take place in a portion of the Arts and Entertainment district include; The Annapolis Film Festival and the Annapolis Fringe Festival.

Don Lamb-Minor, President of IWSA will assume the leadership role of managing the district located between Calvert Street and Spa Road. “The Inner West Street Association,” says Lamb-Minor, “ is grateful for the opportunity to manage this, still emerging, venue and streetscape that will become a vibrant community of artists and culture known as the Annapolis Arts District. We are most grateful for those individuals and organizations that managed and nurtured the district before us; without whom we certainly would not have had and Annapolis Arts District. To them we own a debt of unbridled gratitude. To the future we owe our commitment to creating a concentration of arts and culture venues that supports the arts and benefits of our communities,” he said.

As seed money to aid in the management transition, The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County has awarded a $2,500 founding grant to the new Arts & Entertainment Board of Directors.

“We are pleased to officially hand the torch over to the Inner West Street Association, and know they will do a great job,” says Arts Council Executive Director April Nyman.
The Annapolis Arts and Entertainment district is one of 22 districts in the state of Maryland. The program began in 2001 with the intent to utilize tax incentives to revitalize portions of cities, thus attracting artists, arts organizations, and entrepreneurial enterprises related to entertainment and art.

Mural Contest

What do Leonardo da Vinci, Diego Rivera, and Michelangelo have in common? They were all muralists, committed to sharing their artistic vision with the community.  Murals provide the opportunity for artists to interact with their environment.  In the public debate, this past week has been the mural recently painted above Tsunami in Annapolis on West Street. It doesn’t matter which side you’re on, the debate has gotten people thinking and talking about art in public places. Opportunity knocks for aspiring muralists, with a contest and opportunity to paint a mural in the Annapolis Arts and Entertainment District. The winning artist will receive a $5000 prize in addition to expenses for materials. The deadline is coming up fast. Only one week is left before June 26th.

Calling all artists who are residents of Anne Arundel County to submit your design for a temporary mural to be placed on a permanent structure, the east side wall of 47 Spa Road. Bring beauty and vitality to the Annapolis Arts and Entertainment district with a painted creation that will be approximately 60’ wide and 12’ high. The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County is sponsoring this competition and the June 26th deadline is almost here. So start sketching up an accurately scaled and detailed preliminary illustration. Come up with a budget that includes your cost for designing and materials. Carefully read the guidelines below and good luck. Remember, in order to be selected you need to enter the competition.

It starts on historic Church Circle, goes down Gallery Row, through the Arts District and ends at Westgate Circle. From circle to circle you’ll find restaurants, night spots, galleries, shops and a few vacant retail spaces along the route are occupied with challenging and exciting fringe events.

Artists range from first-timers to nationally known names.

Annapolis Fringe Festival 2014 – Bigger and better than ever!

Kick off the fall FRINGE BUTTONseason by celebrating art – and we do mean celebrate! 

From 4 p.m. to midnight on October 4, historic West Street and up through the Arts & Entertainment district will come to life celebrating the city’s 4th Annapolis Fringe Festival.  Inspired by the famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Annapolis Fringe Festival 2014 is a low-cost, wildly fun one-day event of uncensored live performances by artists who push the boundaries, in the streets and hottest venues of Annapolis, Maryland.  It’s an eclectic mix of music, dance, art and theatre!

Drawing attendees from DC, Baltimore, Northern Virginia and Philadelphia, this event gives artists an opportunity to perform and show their incredible talent to audiences that might not otherwise see their work.  Fringe Artists range from first-timers to nationally known names, such as Lady Rizo at Ram’s Head OnStage.  There will be at least 10 stage acts, and even more smaller acts and street performers.  There’s something for everyone:  comedy, satire, burlesque, performance art, music, alternative theatre, mimes and so much more!

Almost every restaurant and venue from Church Circle to Westgate Circle is participating, and are offering specials on beverages and food for Fringe Fest button-holders.  The festival is walkable, and we will also provide chariot transportation up and down the district throughout the event, which makes it even more fun.  There are Fringe t-shirts for sale this year, male and female, to wear during the event or as a great souvenir.

We’re keeping the admission price low – only $5 – to encourage even more participation.  Last year, approximately 400 people attended the Festival, and this year, we hope to at least double that, and draw from a wider geographic area.  We are dedicated to providing a seamless and wonderfully fun evening for everyone, which will help expand the awareness that Annapolis is a culturally rich town with a great deal to offer, in art, dining and historic charm – a well-rounded experience.
